Hamster getting old?
Hello hamster lovers😊..I have a concern about my 8 month old male siryan hamster and I want to know if someone is experiencing the same thing.
My hamster has been quite static recently. He usually gets out at around 1am to look for food and then get back in his nest to nap and I just feel like he is sleeping all the time. Or he just stands there at the entrance of his nest and doing nothing. I kept quiet to observe him and he is acting a bit lazy. I haven't seen him in his wheel recently either and I just thought he is just getting old. As a note I upgraded his enclosure and added a bigger sand bath, more chews and a thicker layer of bedding.
He was always a bit skittish but he takes treats from my hand and I try to pick him up when he is awake so I don't bother him. Let me know of you have the same experience. Thank you

Re: Hamster getting old?
8 months is still young so his behaviour is not age related.
My male Syrian hamster is around 17/18 months old now and has always acted like your hamster.
I can't remember the last time i saw him running on his wheel, he sits in front of his house or on a shelf and stares at me, probably willing me to go away because he comes out to hamster around after i've gone to bed. He sits in his coconut a lot and pokes his head out when my partner speaks to him but turns around and shows me his tail end when i speak to him.
He's always been like that and has never been a sociable or cuddly hamster but he's tame and enjoys free roaming now and again. That's the only time i ever see him move fast. The only time he kind of interacts with us is in the morning when he wants some of our breakfast.
Give your hamster a health check to make sure he's alright but aside from that i'd put his behaviour down to personality. He probably gets busy when you're asleep and prefers his own company.
You could set up one of those night vision camera recorders to find out what he's up to at night.

Re: Hamster getting old?
Hi Nesquik, 8 months isn't old, sometimes hamsters have lazy days, I like that you've added some extra things. I know that when my hamster was about 10 months he napped more plus the hot weather might have something to do with him not being as active. If you can pick him up, then examine him gently gently massaging him for anything unusual. I would keep an extra eye on him, talk more, encourage him to come out and give him fresh veggies, piece of cucumber or piece of apple as these will make sure he's hydrated.

Re: Hamster getting old?
Hello guys and thank you so much for your replies. I've actually put a baby camera last night in the room where my hamster is and this morning I've checked the footage. Turns out that he wakes up way too late at around 2 in the morning and I am in deep sleep by then. Sometimes I get to see him early in the morning but he does not want to get out and play obviously because he is tired. He used his wheel and did just hamster things. I thought at 8 months they are starting to show signs of aging but I am glad he is doing well. I will continue observing him anyway at least I get to see him being active and all.

Re: Hamster getting old?
Hi. We have had very hot weather recently and hamsters can get overheated and lethargic. A good idea is to have something cool they can sit in. A ceramic mug on its side works well. Put it in the fridge to cool it then add it to the cage. Then out another mug in the fridge ready to swap them round when it loses it’s cool. Maybe one early evening and the second cold one before you go to bed, even if he doesn’t sit in it, it’ll cool things down in his cage.

Re: Hamster getting old?
Hello Serendipity7000 Thank you for the advice. Indeed it was very hot these days and it seems it will be like this for a while. I think this is a good idea especially now and definitely I will give it a try.
