Question Hamster noises

I've had Carbon for a couple of weeks now and one of the things I've noticed is that he's a lot more vocal than Cadmium was. Cadmium almost never made any noise except when she was ill and cranky and the stupid hoomins were making her take that disgusting stuff again, in which case the meaning was very clear.

But Carbon is a lot more vocal that she was - he's told me off a couple of times when something has startled him, and this morning he squeaked quietly at me when I gave him a mealworm which is one of his favourite treats, which to an uneducated not-an-expert me sounded like he was happy about the mealworm? Then, a little while later, he was sat on top of his house, had a quick sandbath, chewed on a monkey nut (he's still working his way through the shell) and squeaked a few more times - it was a bit louder but not loud per se - and then went back to bed.

Neither Cadmium or Hydrogen were vocal at all really, with the exception I mentioned above, so I'm not sure if this is something to be worried about or if he's just a talkative hamster?
He had a check up at the vet on Wednesday and he looked really agitated about it and was quite grumpy when he got home (he forgave me when he noticed I'd scattered his seed mix for him to forage about for) so I'm reticent to take him in again unless he needs to see a vet as I'm worried that if it's nothing the stress of the journey, especially so soon after the last one, will do more harm than good. Obviously, if he does need to go, I'm absolutely willing to do that.

I may just be being paranoid and jumping at shadows, but I know how quickly things can go downhill with hamsters

He could still be settling in and may just be more of a vocal hammy. The trip to the vets may have set him off again until he feels settled again or like you said he could just be happy with his food. If it was me I would just be monitoring the noises, maybe just check his teeth if you can. I've had a couple of hamsters that have been more vocal at times and some that never squeak or chunter at all. Each hamster is different.

Honestly, the rest of his behaviour doesn't make me think there's anything wrong, but not having had a vocal ham before, I'm not used to the noises so I'm not completely sure what the noises mean.

He's asleep now and I haven't heard any other noises.

He seems to have settled really well - an advantage of adopting a ham that seems to have been loved and handled respectfully I suppose? I don't know much about him except that the lady was sad to be giving him up.

Thumbs down Re: Hamster noises

Personally, i would only take a hamster to a vet if there are signs of a medical problem.

You could contact the lady you adopted him from to see if he's always been a vocal hamster.

I recently had four dwarfs in my car and there was a lot of squeaking and hissing going on. The dwarf who lodged at our house screeched at me a few times. I was also surprised at how vocal hamsters can be because mine rarely make a sound. One of my dwarfs was muttering a bit on her first day but soon stopped.

I'm inclined to say not to worry and enjoy your hamster communicating with you.

No, I agree; I don't make a habit of taking them to the vets if they don't seem ill, but after the rapidly mounting costs of Cadmium's RI's I wanted to get pet insurance in case he has any problems, so had to have an initial health check. Given the two deaths so close together as well, it was a relief to be told he was in good health too.

That's interesting that you got pet insurance. When i enquired about it i was told that pet insurance is only available for animals cat sized upwards but not for small ones like hamsters.

Yes you can get it for hamsters Ria, i looked in to it before. I wasn't sure if it was worth it, even if I have spent a small fortune this last year. It could be worth it for you though as you have several hamsters. Off the top of my head i think it was something like £12-£15p/m to start with for one hamster - but it either covers multiple hamsters or you pay a premium for each hamster, but the premium drops for each hamster. (I can't quite remember)

Compared to what I paid in vets fees for Cadmium's RI's, the cost of insurance - which was a little over £150 - was definitely worth it. Fingers crossed we won't need it, but even with savings put aside for this exact thing, the experience with Cadmium was brutal.

Hello!
I also recently got my first vocal hamster, and it was a bit confusing to me too - but I think it's more of a personality thing. Cocoa was somewhat noisy when I first got her, she squeaked whenever she got scared of something. I would say pay attention to when your hammy makes noises to see if it might be a problem! Cocoa had UTI at one point and she did squeak painfully then - I couldn't see her as she was in her house, but later noticed her bloody urine, which made me realise what that noise was about.
But if there's nothing wrong behaviourally or visibly, I don't think there's a reason to worry. Cocoa clicks at me when she's annoyed, and squeaks when something spooks her. She used to be even more vocal but she seemed to grow that out within the first couple of months.
