Default Roborovski running too fast

My absolutely tiny roborovki named Sonic (named appropriately) constantly runs too fast and ends up either flying out his wheel or getting stuck to the bar in the center or the side and hurtling around it repeatedly. I think his tiny body is just too lightweight for the speed he runs at. To combat this I’ve tried getting a larger wheel to potentially slow him down aswell as it being a closed one to stop him flying out the side and injuring himself as much.

Im really concerned for him as if he injures himself he is an incredibly stressed hamster who is the opposite of handtamed despite our efforts (I think he may have been mishandled in the pet shop or picked on by siblings as he was very small) hes been frantic, fast and incredibly timid since we got him and trying to tame him the normal ways leads to him getting incredibly stressed sometimes so much as to pee himself out of fear. Im not sure what I can do to stop him injuring himself aswell as to make him feel comfortable enough around me to not be so stressed.

I genuinely don’t think I could manage to take him to the vet without highly risking him jumping off the table, escaping, or getting overstressed. Just want him to be happy and healthy, any suggestions?

I have an adopted Robo like that who is very timid and prefers to do his own thing. It took three months for him to trust me enough to come onto my hand and that's as far as we got.
I simply accept him for the hamster he is and all i want is for him to have a happy life so i don't try to tame him or attempt to take him out of his tank. That way he doesn't get stressed.

Like your Robo, he is very small and very fast. He also used to get thrown from his wheel so i got him a wheel with a wider running surface. Its a 7in wheel because that's all he needs and now he runs fine without falling out. Its a plastic wheel without a spindle and he needs plastic because he pees in his wheel. A sand area is a good place to place a wheel to ensure a soft landing.

So what happened when you got him a larger, enclosed wheel? Is it more suitable for him?

It led to much less tumbling out but he still tumbles over the spindle very often i dont know quite how to describe it but he gets thrown around the wheel for a few loops and if happens frighteningly often. Sonic is constantly peeing in his wheel, infact i think it may be the only place he actually pees! So constantly being wiped down

Not related to the topic but your username is snail and you have a very fast robo. After 6 months of owning one, i got him sufficiently tame to take him in my hand and move him around the cage. That's it

The first time I saw a robo on a wheel I thought the video was on fast forward, yours has definitely been given the right name supersonic. They're fascinating to watch.

I don’t even know the science behind how they manage to zoom so fast! A little bit scary at times but also fascinating.
