Question Hamster dragging hand into cage

Hi, I’ve had my hamster Oreo for 4 months now and he’s been great with handling i have him with my boyfriend but we live in seperate houses so he spends most of the time at his house and some of the time at my house but stays in the same cage. For the past few days he’s been trying to bite me when I try get him out the cage I have managed to get him out without him biting me but today I just thought I’ll try and if he bite me he bites me, so I put my hand out flat for him to climb onto and he started to bite me, he locked his teeth into my finger and started to drag my hand into his cage. Does anyone know why this is happening all of a sudden I thought maybe he likes the smell of my soap ? Does anyone else have any ideas? Thanks

Hello and welcome to HC!

Hamsters are not that keen on changes and quite sensitive to their surroundings like different sounds, voices, smells etc.

I think that to change his environment from your house to your boyfriend's and back could unsettle him and lead to issues. Just because he's small and living in a portable home doesn't mean that he likes to be "shared". You wouldn't do that with a cat.

How big is his cage? In general, a Syrian needs a minimum 80cmx50cm cage and a dwarf a minimum 70cmx40cm. I'm just wondering because a decent sized cage isn't that easy to move.

I don't think that he likes your soap. It's more likely to be the opposite and its best to use unscented soap before handling a hamster.

It may be an idea to get a hamster each, as long as you're not away for longer than a night and leave Oreo with your boyfriend, if he's happy and settled there.

Welcome to Hamster Central!

like ria said, hamsters do not like changes, frequent movings of their cages from one house to another is not doing him any justice. He doesnt have enough time to get comfortable with his move. How big is his cage? in the usa, your cage needs a minimum of 450 square inches of unbroken floorspace which is about 12inx40in and thats for a dwarf. For a syrian you need atleast 620 square inches which is about 9inx70in. Thats the BARE minimum and you should always strive for bigger.

It really would be best for Oreo to stay at one house, so he wouldnt be in constant stress.

Thank you guys for your reply, sorry I didn’t specify enough when I mean shared we just say like it’s our hamster but I am at university and he is not so he has Oreo at his house a majority of the time I have had Oreo at mine twice now as he couldn’t look after him, for example now we have gone into quarantine and he is having to look after his grandad so cannot look after Oreo etc ... and yeah Oreos cage is big enough he has 3 floors 22x14” so has an area of 924” as I have used the cage with previous hamsters and it has been suitable. Thank you for the help !

Hey, I'm not an expert, but I thought it was worth mentioning that when we talk about floor space for a hamster, extra levels don't count. It refers to a single area of unbroken floor space. If each floor is 22"X14" then you have 308" of floor space.
