I'd put the flying saucer in the playpen. You can easily extend the playpen with a second cardboard box connected with an empty plastic water bottle.
Is the little grey plastic house the house he sleeps in? These houses are way too small for a Syrian. They need a large bottomless house to sit on top of the substrate so they can make a proper nest with lots of torn into strips plain white toilet paper. A removable roof is very practical. You can make a house from a shoe box, get a Ferplast guinea pig house or go for the more expensive Rodipet or Getzoo houses. You said that you made him a cardboard house but is it big enough for a nest and hoard?
A whimzee dog chew is well liked by hamsters if you haven't got one yet. My hamsters ignore all other chews but love their whimzees.
Don't feel deflated. Sometimes its not easy to suss out what a hamster wants. Took me ages to figure out the right set up for my Syrian. I started off with wheels too small, house too small and toys he didn't like. Once he had the set up he liked which included his big wheel and big house plus his beloved coconut hut and other enrichment he got so settled that now its a job to get him out of his cage!

Thanks for this, this is great! I think I’ll struggle to fit an upright 10 inch wheel in the cage but I’ll have a play with the levels to see. It’s 9.5 inches from the lowest floor level to the top of the cage at the moment, we could move it lower though if we move a few bits around.
No he doesn’t sleep in the house, just stored some food in there, he sleeps in this bit (see attached photo)
Oh yes I’ve heard of the whimzee dog chews! Need to order some of those.
Thanks for all the tips - the flying saucer is causing problems in the cage anyway so will try and make that my first fix! Xx

That is undoubtedly one of the cutest hamster pictures I have ever seen!

Re: Bar chewing (on the doors)
🤦🏼*♀️ Any recommendations for a 10inch wheel? I’m in the uk and they don’t seem to do them 😞
I could do a 12 inch but only if I lost the top level.

Re: Bar chewing (on the doors)
I would really recommend a 12 inch Silent Runner, not Spinner - Silent Spinners tend to be very low quality and often don't stay silent if they even work in the first place as well as having a safety flaw due to the design of the wheel(two piece construction - also applies to knockoff Silent Spinner wheels). I would definitely go with a 12 inch wheel though as many hamsters outgrow the 10 inch ones and they really don't have enough space for most Syrians so it would be a better investment in case you end up wanting another hamster in the future after this one!
A proper upright wheel is very important. Flying saucer type wheels are not in any way a substitute for an upright wheel. They do not allow a natural running position and would have significantly less running surface than an upright wheel, along with taking up way more valuable floor space in the cage.

Re: Bar chewing (on the doors)
A 12 inch would be best for a syrian. I started off with a 9.5 and it really was too small - probably the biggest mistake I have made so far. I got it because some people on youTube say 8-12 inch for a syrian, but even my tiny syrian uses a 12 inch. A silent runner is a fantastic 12 inch wheel, expensive but highly recommend, very quiet and solid. A trixie wheel can be hit or miss for noise levels, but mine was ok and about 1/3 of the price of the silent runner.

Re: Bar chewing (on the doors)
The photo of your sleeping hamster is brilliant!
I'd take one platform out because it will free up more space. There are so many things available to set up a barred cage like a smaller, wooden corner platform, long Trixie ladders, degus shelves, sputniks, suspended rat sized tunnels etc. Have a look on the "Let's see your cages" thread on the Forum under Housing.
As for wheels, all my hamsters have this wheel which comes in two different sizes and runs very smoothly and quietly. I buy it in a petshop but i don't know if its available online. Not to be mistaken with the Savic Rolly which is not a good wheel at all.

Ria where do you get your whimzees from? I'm finding it difficult to find some that aren't in massive bulk packets.
