Exclamation Odd sound

Hi everybody. I just joined hamster central because I am so worried for my hamster. Toffi is about 8 weeks old, I got her 3 days ago. For now she has a temporary small CritterTrail cage. I will be building a large bin cage for her sometime this week. She is constantly scared of anything that goes on around her. For example; yesterday I filled her food dish and she hid under her wheel. Even if I move slightly quickly, she wakes up and looks scared. At night, she moves around and runs on her wheel. She eats a LOT and drinks water adequately. However, she makes odd noises when she takes a break or is trying to sleep. It sounds like a sneeze, but I am unsure. Since I can't pick her up yet, I can't see if she had a cold. Her ears perk up when she plays, but she makes the sound so often. I don't know what a sneeze sounds like. Could she be sick or allergic to the bedding? I don't use cedar or pine shavings.

Hello and welcome to HC!

What kind of hamster do you have? Does she have a house or hide big enough to sleep in and enough substrate to burrow down? A hamster needs that to feel safe and comfortable. They don't like to feel exposed. You've only had her for three days so it's perfectly normal that she's scared and nervous. She needs to settle in and the sooner you give her a proper home the better so she can make her home with a nest and hoard. She may not eat all the food and hoard some of it, that's what hamsters do. I'd talk to her gently for now so she gets to know your voice and carry some tissue on your body for a few hours then tear it into strips and put it in her cage so she gets to know your scent. I can't comment on the noise she makes because i haven't come across it before. What kind of substrate do you use?

I have a female Syrian. Since she is still in a small "critter universe" cage, she has a burrow spot under her wheel she uses quite a bit. I have done the tissue thing, it doesn't seem to affect her, she just ends up playing with it. She eats and hoards a lot, and loves fruits and veggies (in moderation). I use recycled paper substrate, and she only has maybe 3 inches. I know all of this is not adequate for a syrian, especially a female, so I am building a bin cage ASAP. However, I was not fully educated on how much space a hamster would need before I got her, so I opted for the small cage. She drinks a moderate amount of water that I refill every day, and I refill the food daily as well. I know a lot about the technicalities of hamsters, but not so much the personality aspect. She stopped running on her wheel as often after the 2nd day.
