Snatchy behaviour
Hello, it's been quite a long time since I've been on here but today I acquired a Dwarf hamster from the P@H adoption. Shes about four months old and seems well overall - she's incredibly bold and inquisitive. She's been settling herself in within a quiet part of our home for most of the day, but I've noticed that she's very snatchy with her food. She practically jumps on it and snatches it away almost instantly. Could this be learned behaviour from living with other Dwarf hamsters and in turn a territorial instinct to nab and grab what she can?
She is my first Dwarf, but I love her so much already. It was her fluffy butt and tail that was sticking out of her food bowl that truly did it for me
Thank you for reading

Re: Snatchy behaviour
With my dwarfs (roborovski housed separately after fighting) they tend to sit inside their bowls, find their favourite things and then run and either eat it or store it somewhere, I like to think of it as guarding their treasure! The only times they stay still and eat it instantly is for their pumpkin/sunflower seeds as I guess they are too good to wait for lol.
For yours it may be a learned behaviour or she may still just be settling in, however I wouldn't be worried about it

Re: Snatchy behaviour
I have an adopted dwarf from pets@home who snatched his food (and bit my finger while doing so) at first but he has settled down and doesn't snatch so much now.
Once your dwarf realizes that all the food is hers and she doesn't have to share it, she should be alright. Takes time for some hamsters to settle in.
It's hard to say what causes certain behaviours in adopted hamsters because their history is often unknown and i find pets@home in particular very vague with their background information or non existent.
