Question Dwarf Pair Squabbling

Hi there,

As of yesterday I have adopted a pair of adorable russian dwarfs (not sure their exact breed) from the rspca. They were handed in with about 30 others and when i went to adopt them they were in a group of four. They were all getting along great and I was told they had to be adopted in pairs or groups so I took 2 males. Since getting them home and placing them in their enclosure (they’re in a large bin cage with two+ of everything) I have noticed a lot of squabbling. It only ever lasts a few seconds but is very loud! It often comes about when one is already in a hide and the other tries to join it or they bump into each other accidentally. My dad works with small animals and suggested that by splitting the original group it’s upset the dominance of the remaining pair and that they just need to work it out between them, I’m monitoring them carefully to ensure nobody gets hurt but at what point should I throw in the towel and split them? Thanks ) (I have only owned syrians up until this point so its all rather different!”

Honestly I would suggest splitting them up now before one of them gets hurt. More often then not they don't actually work it out. From what I've read and heard all hamsters are better off when housed by themselves.

Agree. They have had two big changes - split from the group and also a new cage and new environment. It is very common for them to fall out and start fighting especially as they get older and hormones kick in. Best to separate them asap and each have their own cage. This can quickly turn into serious maiming or death, so if you have a plastic bin you could set it up as a temporary cage with the lid off, until you can sort another cage.

Id definitely recommend splitting them up. Its common for them to start fighting even when they’ve previously got on. If you have a cage ready split them up immediately because one could end up badly injured or even dead. As hamsters are not very sociable and are actually cannibals
