Hello all, today donut’s new wheel came in and he has stopped running back and forth and just runs on the wheel now. He still exhibits cyclical behavior (runs on wheel for 10 seconds and stops to sniff same spot), but he seems much less stressed now. I think the issue was he couldn’t get his wheel to spin so was running instead. We got him a sand bath too.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice.

Agree. The cage is too empty for him to feel secure. Adding tubes and tunnels will help plus extra hidey places - a tissue box eg. Also add lots of nesting material as well as the substrate. Torn up strips of plain white toilet paper in a heap. It will give him something to do foraging for it and taking it under the substrate yo build a nest.

Update: He ended up stopping when we got a wheel that worked. He still starts running back and forth without the wheel but he always has it in his cage. Other than that he is a perfectly healthy boi!

Glad to hear that he's happier now. A wheel is a hamster essential and without a working one they go a bit crazy. I had a frantic rescue hamster once who didn't know what a wheel was for until i taught him to use it and he calmed right down.

Great to hear he is happy with his wheel. If you want to make him even happier add in everything else that’s been suggested with lots of burying and hiding opportunities and he will be over the moon and reward you with his antics
