Hello, he only seems to do it when we go close to the tank. We have 2 toilet paper rolls in the tank, and will add more stuff tomorrow. Hopefully he will stop in a day or two as he adjusts to the home.

Thank you all for the great advice.

He’s still running back and forth (2nd night), but only seems to do it if he sees someone. He currently has 2 toilet paper tubes as well, and were going to get him some more stuff tomorrow.

Thank you all for the helpful advice. Just a question, when is the best time to place new things in his tank? Maybe when he is sleeping?

Don't think it matters because he'll wake up anyway. Hamsters are curious and want to know what's going on. My Robo also lives in a small tank but is happy because he's got things to do. Here's a photo. The sand bath/wheel and the ceramic mushroom are sitting on top of Ferplast guinea pig houses minus the front panel so there's no danger of anything falling on top of my burrowing Robo.

Thank you Ria. We have added a few more tunnels and bridges. This is the 4th night but he's still pacing back and forth for hours when he wakes up. We are not sure what to do.

I have included a video with the behaviour.

What happens when you put for example the cardboard roll of a kitchen roll in the place where he paces? Does he go and do it somewhere else?
Or scatter some of his food mix around on the substrate to distract him. Add bunches of millet sprays to nibble on and a whimzee.
I've noticed that his food bowl is empty. My hamsters have food available at all times because hamsters gather food and take it to their hoards. They don't eat it all but hoarding is a natural instinct.
I'd try and do things to distract him by filling the empty spaces with stuff he's interested in.

That isn't good and he does seem very stressed. Could you add a load more substrate at one end so he can bury himself in it? They often don't like little houses and like to disappear under the substrate to nest. Also is the room warm enough? It's a cold time of year and they can really feel the cold. Ideally it needs to be 20 degrees and even a bit of heat on during the night if it's very cold at night. I put a little heater on on a timer for a couple of hours in the night on very cold nights. Otherwise, have the heating on till we go to bed and then again from 5am.

I would definitely add a load more substrate at one end of the cage - about a third of the cage 20 cm deep. You could also hang a hammock from the inside of the cage top - high enough that he can't get up to it - but it will make him feel more secure from above.

Longer term - adding a platform would help. Assume he has a wheel? No wheel and he will go frantic. Ria mentioned the food bowl was empty - always ensure there is food in the bowl every day - they get anxious otherwise.

Is the water bottle working ok?

If there is food and water and enough substrate to bury himself in to feel safe, and he is still doing ti then suggest getting him out of the tank into a safe area - eg bathtub or playpen, with a few toys and some hand taming or just out of cage time. Distraction and let him burn off some energy and explore. He may settle again when back in the tank.

Don't clean anything for ages so he has the best chance of settling. My experience with robos (and have heard the same from others) is they ignore houses and build a burrow in the substrate - unless it's a labyrinth house. So add more substrate - at least at one end.

Let us know how he is doing.

Thank you for the advice. He is still going back and forth but is exploring his surroundings more too.

If we put a tube or block the path he just keeps doing it, either going through it or around. We've been feeding him 2 spoons a day, is it ok to put more?

As for the wheel, we have a kaytee silent spinner but he hasn't used it yet because it is very hard to spin. I have ordered another wheel so hopefully he will be able to use that tomorrow.

My Robo used to have the 6.5in Kaytee Silent Spinner and it run very smoothly. Which size do you have? I'd check the adjustment at the back of the wheel.

Robos eat very little and ours never empties his dish even though i only feed a small scoop daily. Yours must be hoarding it somewhere, which is what they do, to go through two spoonfulls and i don't know the answer about feeding more. You could additionally give him some dried mealworms, brown linseeds, a couple of sunflower or pumpkin seeds and hide it somewhere for him to sniff it out. Tiny pieces of cucumber they like too.

You have an unusual hamster. Did you get him from a pet shop or a breeder? I'm just wondering what his behaviour was like prior to moving in with you.

I have a dwarf who has behavioural issues of a different nature and he was a bit crazy when i adopted him. He has calmed down, still has issues but that's just the way he is.

My roborovski hamster used to spin. He is much calmer these days. He lives in a hamster heaven with lots of bedding and a house with no base so that he can burrow.

Sometimes this kind of frantic movement can be related to neurological issues.
