Default Syrian male is TOO tame

My Syrian male, Chubbs, is a very calm and patient hamster, almost too much so. He has a very predictable schedule and when he's out its not much to look at. He sleeps most of the day in his little hole he dug in the 6-8 inches of bedding ive given him. When he wakes up somewhere around 8-9pm he'll get a sip of water and just groom for the next couple hours in one of his hides. When I finally go to bed he'll get on his wheel and run on that for a long while. All in all very predictable behavior with little deviation and no quirky anomalies. He hardly ever shows signs of boredom. He has about 1000 sq inch of space, multiple hides, chews, sand, and a little platform so I guess its my fault for him being so "relaxed"

He's very easy to handle. Doesnt squirm. Doesnt bite. He doesnt really enjoy getting picked up but he "tolerates" me when he does get scooped up by me.

At this point I wish he was a female so he would be a lot more energetic and harder to please. I dont want to say he's boring, but...yea haha. Nonetheless he is still mine so I will do my best to keep him happy.

Can anyone else relate?

Sounds like he is a delightful little guy. You are lucky to have him!

Oh and some female hamsters can be just like him. I have one of those!

I’ve got a couple of Chinese like that... very cute but they don’t really do much and their out of cage time often consists of snuggling up on me. When in their cage they’ll either be in their beds or their hammocks just chilling out.

One of them is a female called Elizabeth and I think in her case it’s inherited as both her grandfather and her father were just as laid back. In fact her grandfather had a wheel in his cage but never used it despite being perfectly able to.

ahh I wish mine was like that haha I have a female Syrian and she's the complete opposite in some respects. It took a few weeks for me to tame her and now she doesn't mind me. I will say it is hard pleasing her sometimes which makes me feel bad but I'm doing the best I can. So I definitely wouldn't say that having a really relaxed hamster is all bad. I think dwarfs typically have a lot more energy so you could look into getting one of those.

Chubbs seems to be a happy and contented hamster with a calm personality. My Syrian is like that. He's happiest within his own company and often actively avoids me in case i take him out of his beloved cage. He spends loads of time in his house and when he's not in his house he's in his coconut. He's lazy and lovely, anti social and tame and very tidy.

You could go to a hamster rescue where they know their hamsters personalities and adopt a hamster that's demanding attention, chews on the bars trying to get out, bites sometimes, pees in their nest and is difficult to please and tame.

If you have the space, time and resources to get a second hamster it may be a good idea to adopt one in need of a good home.

I started off with one and have currently three of three different species.

You could get a Robo as well . Their personalities also vary and they can be hard to handle but they are very entertaining to watch and ours would sit for conversations through the bars. They also come out a bit more - during the day sometimes.

Haha I started off with one and now have four! Each very different in personality and each very very special. Hamsters are wonderful little creatures.
