Hamster scratching corners
Hi guys,
My hammie Houdini is currently in a massive bin cage with loads of bedding and toys to chew, scratch and keep him occupied, even though he has all of this he won't stop scratching at the corners of his cage. It's getting to the point where it's starting to get through the cage, any ideas on how to stop him doing this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks EveNadene
PS: he gets a good amount of free roam and ball time too

Re: Hamster scratching corners
What is the square feet of the cage? Even if your hamster has a lot of enrichment they still like to be able to roam around. He's probably trying to dig his way out.
Another thought is, what kind of hamster is it and whats the gender? I've heard female syrians are notorious for never being happy with their cage.

Could you post a photo of your set up? What's Houdini like when he is out of his cage? Does your bin cage have a meshed window so he is able to see out and interact with people?

Re: Hamster scratching corners
It does sound like he is trying to get out and maybe needs a bigger cage with different levels/more enrichment etc. Although you did say the cage was massive! Massive can vary in terms of different peoples views I guess - what does it measure? If it is big enough and set up well then he may need a glass tank.
I think one difficulty with bin cages and tanks is it is difficult to set up different levels and platforms etc - I think they need a platform.

Re: Hamster scratching corners
If it really is massive then maybe there is too much open space and he feels insecure and wants to escape - or the bedding isn't deep enough. They need a good few inches of substrate minimum (I tend to go with about 6") and plenty of places for hiding - under a platform, in a large house - lots of floor toys and tunnels so they can run around and not feel too exposed from above.
The other thing that can make them want to escape is too much cleaning out. It removes all their familiar scent and they feel invaded.
