Normally super gentle hamster bit me
Hello. We have three dwarf hamsters, two established females and a brand new young male. All stay in completely separate cages but their cages are all next to one another.
Our eldest girl, Monty, who is around 16 months old, is such a gentle character and is completely tame and very friendly. She has never bitten anybody. The last few days she's had a bit of a red spot on the skin on her arm and we've been applying cream from the vets to it. She doesn't seem to have even noticed it but we saw it and are treating it as she's had similar before.
I had just been handling our other girl hamster and put her back in her own cage immediately prior to picking Monty up to check her arm.
As I picked Monty up she bit me really hard and repeatedly, sinking her teeth in deeply and with intent.
I was honestly astounded as she is so placid normally.
I'm trying to understand what made her do this as it is very unlike her. I abandoned the arm checking and placed her back in her cage.
Subsequently, Monty went into one of her 'hidey' spots in her pipes and has stayed there all evening.
Any advice on what I did to make her react this way would be appreciated. I love her and don't want to stress her out.

Did you wash your hands between handling the two girls?
If not Monty may have gotten the scent of the other girl and reacted to it.

Re: Normally super gentle hamster bit me
Hi RiaP, no I didn't wash my hands after handling Nanuk. I don't usually as Monty is so placid but I've learned my lesson now.
She seems a bit out of sorts today too, she usualky spends the day in her house but she's burrowed into the substrate under her wheel and hasn't been out much except briefly to eat her fresh veggies.

What does the vet think causes the red spots?

Re: Normally super gentle hamster bit me
It was diagnosed as eczema. He gave us Curatex cream to apply.
