Shy Syrian Hamster
Hello! I am glad that I joined a community where people can talk about their pets and learn from others as well.
I decided after almost 9 years to get another Syrian hamster. I don't remember much about their behaviour so I would need some advice. I had Nesquik for about 2 and a half days and he is 6-7 week old male Syrian hamster. I tried to interact with him. At the moment he is not doing well when I try to hold him, but he does not mind if I hand feed him or if I move my hand slowly in his cage while eating. I want to start bonding more with him but he is sleeping all the time and wakes up only late at night and by the time I am awake at half 7 he is asleep. I know they are nocturnal that is why I am trying not to wake him up. I just occasionally give him a fruit or a vegetable to snack just to let him know that I want to be his friend. I feel like he is very shy and that I should give him more time to settle.
Would someone give me any advice about what to do next so I can build a more solid bond with him. Really appreciated. Thank you.
I have attached a picture of his cage. He is currently in his house under the bridge sleeping.

Re: Shy Syrian Hamster
Hi and welcome. You said you have had him only 2.5 days? If that is correct I would put off picking him up and holding him.
As you seem to be already doing, I would be putting my hand in his cage and letting him get used to that, so he can approach you in his own time. Holding bits of food out for him, letting him come to you to get them, if you leave the food on your palm let him come get that.
If he is not walking willingly into your hands yet, I would get a jug and transport/pick him up in that.
do you have a bath? can you do some bath tub bonding?
If not, have you a safe area that you are happy he can run around in. Maybe a small place, so you can encourage him to come to you and climb up on you etc.
That's basically what I do with my hammies when I first get them.
Hope this helps.

Re: Shy Syrian Hamster
Thank you so much for your response. Yes I have a bath and I will try to put him in the tub and give him some treats. I think it is best to do that late in the evening as I don't want to wake him up in the morning or during the day.
Last night he was running in his wheel so he was active but by the moment he hears the sound of doors he freeze. I am going to be more patient with him. Thank you.

Re: Shy Syrian Hamster
Welcome to the forum! I have found it very helpful and supportive. Congratulations on getting nesquik. I look forward to hearing more about him. As Luna has said, it is still very early days. Take it slowly and go at his pace and you will get there. Good luck! X
