More active in the daytime
My coworker gave me a roborovski dwarf after hers had a litter. I kept her as a class pet for three weeks until I became too concerned for her safety and moved her home with me. I had always figured she was active in the day at school because the students were too loud and was probably more active at night when no one was around. I have had her home for two weeks now and she is still more active during the day than at night (I am up until all odd hours and wake up at four am daily). I hardly ever see her out at night but she is always out and about in the afternoon.

Re: More active in the daytime
I love that you realised a classroom wasn't the right place for her and you took her home.
When you say she is always out and about in the afternoon, is it for long? She may just be gathering food and bedding and having a drink. Hamsters can do that.
Also, it may just take her a while to readjust after living in a noisy classroom. I wouldn't worry too much about it, just give it time and see what happens.

I agree it may just take a bit longer to adjust in her new surroundings. What kind of cage and toys does your hammy have?

Re: More active in the daytime
I’d say she’s probably still adjusting. But it could just be a quirk of hers. I once had a hamster who was just as active during the day as during the night. He’d be up running on his wheel or begging to come out almost all day and only seemed to sleep for a few hours during the day.

Re: More active in the daytime
Thanks. She is my first hamster in 20+ years and I want to make sure I am doing things right. I have her in a large bin cage that I plan on upgrading after the holidays (currently 540 square inches of floor space). She has two small hideouts, a large multistory hideout that she adores climbing over, tunnels both on top and going into the substrate, various chews, a little seesaw, a sand bath, and of course her wheel. She does enjoy burrowing so I keep the substrate super deep on one side. Now that she is home I have been feeding her and spot cleaning her cage at night now instead of in the morning. It does seem like she only sleeps for a few hours during the day and she comes out half asleep still for food at night.

Hamsters usually come out half asleep for food in the day, not at night, so it seems like your hamster has got things a little bit mixed up. She should fix her schedule over a period of time.
If, however, she doesn't, then lucky you for having a hamster that you can play with when you are awake!

Re: More active in the daytime
I’ve had several hamsters that are more active during the day. Sometimes their sleeping habits change over time, other not. Just means you get more chances to interact with them!
