Hamster wanting to come out every night at 2am
Hi,
I haven't posted in awhile. I'm struggling to sleep at the moment, Domino wants to come out every night quite late. No matter, if I put new things in her cage or hide her food or treats, she still wants to come out to play. But I can't keep doing it as I have a full time job and work along hours, I need the sleep. She's started chewing the bars again now because I won't get her out sometimes.
She is in a IKEA Detolf cage. Please could you help me out with something.
Thank you, I think I've given you all the information.

Can you get her out of your room ? Hamsters are most active at night, so I don’t think she will stop soon. I’m also wondering what bars she is chewing on ?

I can't as my bedroom is my living room. It's a studio flat.
There's bars in the detolf to hold the glass together, you can't remove them. Thinking of downgrading to a bin cage.

I have seen someone wrap toilet/kitchen roll cardboard tubes around metal bar at the top of a detolf cage before. Is that the bit your hamster is trying to chew. Just thought I would mention it as it may help.

No matter what you do you can't expect your hamster to stop coming out at a time when you are trying to sleep. Hamsters are nocturnal, so the only thing you would really be able to do is get used to the noise she makes.
If you either put her in a cage without any bars or give her more to do, you should find this a lot easier as she would make a lot less noise.
Has she got a wheel?

I know they're nocturnal, and yes she has a wheel, just doesn't use it much. I was just wondering what could I do to keep her entertained. I'll be trying the kitchen roll idea 😁😁

Re: Hamster wanting to come out every night at 2am
When I first brought him home my hamster had a bar chewing problem. I did try the kitchen roll method but he just moved to chewing the uncovered bars and I couldn’t cover them all. He did eventually grow out of it.
I’d say your best option would be to put her in a tank or bin cage.
How big is her wheel? If it’s not big enough that could be why she isn’t using it. And if she has a wheel that’s big enough for her to run on that will alleviate boredom and consequently bar chewing. She should have a 12” wheel. Silent runners are great because they are, well, silent.

The idea of putting her in a bin cage would likely work. I have a big bin cage that’s 80cmx50cm, that wouldn’t be too small for a syrian.

Re: Hamster wanting to come out every night at 2am
My hamster went through a phase where he would bite the cage bars at 3am until I came to play with him. For the first week I kept coming to get him when he would do that. Like you, I was getting pretty sleep deprived.
Finally I realized that I was rewarding him for this behaviour. I tried to cover as much of the bars that he had access to as I could with cardboard, and I stopped rewarding the behaviour. I also expanded his cage to double the amount of space he had (from a single critter nation to a double critter nation) to give him more space to play in. It probably took another week and he stopped bar biting.
