Unhappy Ah!!! Feral Syrian?

Hi everyone,

My name is Emily and I’m new here, although I’m currently owning my third hamster so have a good amount of experience. As I’m under the age of 18 my mum will be made aware of this post.

9 days ago we bought a new female syrian. The place we got her from told us how she has had such an amazing transformation. They told us she used to be ‘feral’ upon being separated form her mother/siblings, but had gone through an amazing change...well.

I fully understand hammies are super stressed in new environments. I have to say though, this past week she hasn’t been too frightened. She’s been taking food from my/ my mum’s hand.

But last night the oddest thing happened..
I walked into the room and she was out of her little hideaway and standing in this frozen trance.. completely still. She didn’t leave so I thought now might be a good idea to entice her with a treat. Upon putting my hand into the cage, she SPRINTED away!!? No signs of aggression whatsoever, but she completely ran! She ran into the back of her cage into a kind of circle-motion and was completely frantic. After about 5 second of doing this she finally stopped.. and returned to a normal-ish behaviour, but I left her in peace.

She is my third hamster and to be honest, I’ve never had a single problem with any of the others. They’ve been so easily and friendly from the get go, and lived such long, happy lives.
We got her as a kind of therapy pet as I’m not well and it’s nice for my mum to interact with her for when I’m able to go to school.

Her cage is large and well above the minimum requirements and has plenty of toys/things to stimulate her. She seems to have reverted back to what the place we got her from described..?

Any advice?

Default Re: Ah!!! Feral Syrian?

Unless this becomes a pattern of behavior I wouldn't worry.

She could have just been spooked by something, froze (as an instinctual thing) then freaked at the hand as she was still in fight-flight-freeze mode. They can get spooked by anything; unusual smells, a breeze, a noise we possibly can't even hear etc etc. and she also just might be having an off day.

Also; Welcome to the forum!
