Hamilton Doesn't Use His Hut
Recently, Hamilton stopped using his peanut hut because he got a little bit bigger. So, I bought him a new hut where he'd have more room inside to make nests, but he doesn't want anything to do with this new hut. I've put treats in there to see if that'll help him feel a bit more relaxed, but he just carries the treats to the opposite end of his bin. Is this normal for hamsters?

Re: Hamilton Doesn't Use His Hut
Yes, it is normal because hamsters very much have a mind of their own and don't always do what we would like them to do.
You could tear some plain white toilet paper into strips and put it next to the new hide. I'd also put some substrate with his scent on in there.
He may decide to use it yet so give him time and don't worry. He's probably more relaxed about it than you, lol.
I'd also make sure that he has more hides to choose from.
My newest hamster Percy is currently asleep under his table and not in his house. Doesn't bother me, as long as he's happy..

Re: Hamilton Doesn't Use His Hut
Hi
Theodore has 5 different hides all suitable to sleep in and I leave it up to him where he wants to sleep. I couldn't make him choose one over the other even if I tried! He has a mind of his own and is more stubborn than I am. LOL
Funny thing is that for the last month or so, he hasn't been using any of them most of the time. He has a favourite dark corner under one of his bendy bridges and that's where I find him snoring away most days when I get home from work. For me, I don't really worry where he sleeps, as long as he's acting happy and showing no stress - which he isn't. I'm good with whatever he decides. I have noticed though that he - he's a little Russian Hybrid - likes his smaller hides to sleep in than his bigger ones.
I do as Ria suggested ... I give him a nice little mound of toilet paper strips every couple of weeks and let him decide where best to use them In the end, Hams will be Hams.
And so it goes.

What are signs of stress? He's been pretty relaxed, but it would be good for me to know what to look out for.
