I feel like my hamster doesn't like me
First off, I'm not entirely sure this is a behavioral thing but I don't know what other category this would go under.
Basically, I have never been a hamster owner up until recently. I'm more of a rat person. You see, my pet rat, Noodle, passed away recently so my friends decided to get me a hamster to help me go through her death.
Noodle, and every other rat of mine in the past, would always love to cuddle. I read online and it said hamsters enjoy cuddling too.
And I know not every hamster is the same, but mine just wants to run from me all the time. She never settles down. Never wants to cuddle. I've had her for about a month now.
Any time I take her out for her to play she wants to find a way to escape.
Any time I put her in her hamster ball she tries to chew her way out.
All she does is sleep and try to escape
Is it something I'm doing? Does she just need time to get used to me? Or is it just what hamsters do?

How big is her cage?
Hamsters tend to be more energetic and less cuddly in general and they will run through you're hands as apposed to staying still most of the time.

Re: I feel like my hamster doesn't like me
Sorry for the loss of your rat, Noodle.
I don't associate the word "cuddle" with hamsters, although many may eventually get to that stage. My current little guy is quite mellow in temperament and will sit comfortably in my hands, but I think he prefers to explore and run around. Mid-day if he comes out of his house for food, he appears to enjoy being petted while he eats, and then he returns to his house to sleep. They are solitary creatures by nature whereas rats are known to be more social.
However, hamsters are still very enjoyable pets. What type of hamster do you have?

Re: I feel like my hamster doesn't like me
If she is trying to get out of her ball by chewing, I would stop using the ball. Whilst my hamsters pretty much won't stay still and be cuddled (unless they are very sleepy an djust woken up), if I lay down or sit on the floor whilst they are free roaming they will not leave me alone, running up and all over me. Maybe that's something you could do with your hamster?

Re: I feel like my hamster doesn't like me
She may need longer to adapt to her new home, everything from smells, noises, voices will have an affect on her. Not all hamsters want to be cuddled, it's important that she gets use to your scent and voice so be sure to talk to her at every opportunity even if she can't be seen.

Re: I feel like my hamster doesn't like me
The longest my hamster ever sat still for cuddling was about 5 minutes. Once. I've had him 9 months now. He is always busy, looking around checking in this corner, that corner, running up and down places. But I sit in the bathtub with him where he can't escape, and he loves to run all over me, climbing up to my shoulder, even the top of my head, then sliding back down. So I get my cuddles sort of indirectly, because he's almost always on the move.
