Trying to tame my hamster, any advice is welcome!
I recently got a hamster about a week ago and it's the first hamster I've ever taken care of so I'm a bit scared of him biting me but I've researched a lot and have been trying to follow what most websites say about taming and slowly getting him used to me. But I think he's a really timid boy and he doesn't come out much so my mom and i have been taking the hideout out of the cage (after making a little noise to wake him up a bit) at around 7:30 to give him treats and get him to smell me but its been a week and the most he does is smell my hand and take the treat although once he put his hand on mine while he ate a piece of strawberry out of my hand (haven't tried to pet him but my mom has a few times and he jumps a bit sometimes.) Any tips on how to speed this up or make more progress would be really appreciated (sorry about how long this is I'm a bit of a rambler)

Have you a bath, could you try bath tub bonding? You may just need to be patient and go a bit slower, what type of hamster is he? Also, I consider both my syrian hamsters to be tame, they clamber all over me and i can hold them and pick them up, they don't bite, but i find they don't really like being petted, especially near their head, upper back. Giving them a little fluffy butt massage they seem to be happy with, especially when busy eating or chewing a toy/food!

Re: Trying to tame my hamster, any advice is welcome!
hey thanks for replying, I actually have a Syrian Hamster too (named Gilbert), I didn't have a bathtub near by but I was able to find a tub I could use for now. I used it while I was cleaning his cage, because he luckily was trained at the store to get in his hideout so I could safely transfer him without scaring him, and he finally let me pet him a little (or more likely I finally build up the courage to pet him) and then was trusting enough to wander around his cage and eat while I was moving stuff around in his cage so I'm hoping to keep making progress.
also quick question should I rearrange his stuff cause they like to explore or keep it the same (which I have been doing.)
THANKS AGAIN!
still new to this website pretty sure I didn't reply right but thats cool

Hi, loving the name. Glad you plucked up the courage to touch him
I would keep his stuff the same for at least a few weeks - ie. min a month until he gets used to everything. After this time if you want to change it up, you could try swopping or moving one or two things at first.. see how it goes or if it stresses him out. When he is in the tub, I would be adding and taking things away so he can explore, just not to his cage/living area.
and yes you replied fine. so no worries.

Take it slow......let him set the pace. I had a hard time being patient, but it payed off.
