Exclamation how to stop plastic cage chewing

teddy has been doing so well with not trying to chew the top of his cage (it's a bin cage). it's aroud 665 square inches. he has plenty of bedding, a good sized wheel which is runs in a lot, multiple chews including wooden, wicker, cardboard tube and whimzees and a hanging wooden chew. also, he has been in this cage for around 4 and a half months. i also scatter feed to help keep him busy

just this evening he is starting to try and chew at the top again. is there any way i can discourage this? i have misophonia and the sound is ridiculously annoying and drives me crazy, let alone it's bad for him.

I saw the photos of your cage on another thread. I noticed there is quite a bit of open space, especially on the side where the wheel is. I know you are working on getting a new box for a hide, but maybe if you could fill that space up with some other boxes/tunnels/bendy bridge type things etc. I think I'm right in saying that you are only young and don't have a lot of money (forgive me if i remembered that incorrectly) so could you look around your house and see if there are any packaging materials that you could reuse to help give your hamster a few more places to run through/hide in. My thinking behind suggesting that is if had more things like that then he may get a bit more distracted from chewing the top of his cage. It's great that you scatter feed. Could you try putting some food in old toilet tubes etc (you mentioned these- but not sure how you are using them). Victoria Raechel just did a new video on this on you tube if you have not seen it already. So, to sum up what I am trying to say if you could focus on filling his cage up a bit more he may be more inclined to not chew the top of his cage. He is very cute btw.

i have done those boredom breakers but he doesnt even bother chewing them he just moves the pieces around until he can just grab the treats and it's over in like 2 minutes.

i'm thinking of getting one of those stretchy elastic plastic tube things from petsmart too. but the issue is that one of those corners is the on where he pees (unless he changes his mind) and i don't want to cover that up.

That is kind of the idea with those boredom breaker ideas - they don't last long - but it does give them something to do. I'v also seen people 'glue' on hamster food on to cardboard or safe wood pieces with a flour/water paste, i want to investigate this idea better. I think I know the tubes you are on about - i have one hanging in Luna's cage, could you part submerge it under the bedding with the opening at one end on the surface, would that work with the toilet corner?

i might use it in the gap between the bendy bridge and the side of the cage. so runs between both sides.
