hamster chewing ikea knuff
so i just put an ikea knuff (the wooden magazine holder w/ the bottom removed) in teddy's cage as a hide/level. he's tried to chew at some of the edges (i did my best to sand any sharp edges down beforehand). i'm worried it will splinter if he chews on it too much??
i don't have anything to coat it with - i'm not worried about him peeing on it because he's very good with peeing in his corner
if anyone has any advice please respond asap!

It's plywood so it wouldn't be good to chew even if it doesn't splinter. Some people may try to say otherwise, but it simply isn't safe and would be even worse coated(as most coatings are basically plastic).

I use the Ferplast guinea pig house minus the front panel as a level in Gordon's tank. It's submerged into substrate so acts as a good sized level/platform and costs about the same as the Ikea Knuff but is suitable for chewing.

Re: hamster chewing ikea knuff
i’m just upset because we spent like $14 on it and now i cant even use it. everyone recommended it and i love the look and now i’m too worried to put it in his cage.
i wasted money and it’s annoying but i don’t want him to injure himself so i won’t be putting it back in. my mom is gonna be pissed but whatever.
i’m not sure i can easily get the ferplast house here in canada. i’ll look on amazon.
edit: the ferplast house is almost $30 on amazon so that’s not going to happen. i just struggle finding good hides for him because he doesn’t sleep in plastic ones and there are no good wooden ones that are easily accessible.

How about a cardboard or shoe box. I think Schwartzie made a hide out of a box - if you look on her video and you can use the top of it as a shelf.

Sorry, i didn't check which country you live in when i suggested the Ferplast.
I'd take Luna's good advice and use a cardboard box like a shoe box for a house. Just cut the base out so it sits on the substrate and cut a big enough entrance out.
You can also turn an empty cereal box on its side and you have the same cave as the Knuff.
A strong packaging cardboard box could act as a platform.
Hamsters are fine with cardboard and it doesn't cost anything to replace should your hamster chew it.
My hamster doesn't like plastic either.
I think we all waste money at some point by buying the wrong thing and yes, it is annoying.

Re: hamster chewing ikea knuff
Hi
You can get the best hides at Dollarama or Dollar Tree. The gift boxes they sell are very sturdy, come in all sorts of sizes and even have seasonal themes! I've been using them with Theodore and they work great. He has three different sizes at his disposal. I take the box, flip it upside down and cut a nice hole in it leaving about 1 inch around the edge. I then put the lid over this cut-out and have it as the top of the hide. This makes for quick and easy checking-cleaning. I then cut a door or two into the sides depending on where its going and plant the box in the substrate. A bendy bridge over the door adds some extra hiding space and all is good! Nice thing is that these boxes only cost a dollar or two depending on the size.

Re: hamster chewing ikea knuff
i never even thought to use dollarama boxes! thanks so much! if i can't find a good shoe box (i forgot to check at my grandparents today lol but im going back tomorrow) then i'll stop by the dollar store as soon as i can.
at the moment i have an empty tissue box with the bottom cut out (and all plastic removed) with two doors cut out in his cage as a hide. dont know if he'll use it as it's relatively low, but it's on top of quite a bit of substrate so if he wants to he can burrow down about 6-8 inches.
edit: he went into the kleenex box house and flipped it over and is not sitting in it with it upside down. this boy i swear lol. it's too light i suppose but i'll keep it in there tonight until i can find something better tomorrow.
