Default Confused on what my hamster means

Hi, I bought a Syrian hamster yesterday. I clean his cage and he sniffs me, he’s eat a carrot from my fingers and just generally curious about me. But when I stroke him as he feeds he sort of spooks at it. Just wondering what I could do to get him to trust me and be more confident with me

I wouldn’t stroke him on day 2. He needs a few days preferably a week to settle in on his own with limited interaction, just talking is fine. Going too quickly can worsen things in the long run so leave any handling etc until he is fully settled in his cage, I expect he is nervous right now. Give him time then try again with the feeding and only move onto handling when he is less nervy - I personally don’t really stroke hamsters as it can shock them a bit especially when they’re not tame.
