Unhappy My female dwarf hamster just sleeps and thats it!!

Hello. I’m a new member here and I need yor advice. Recently I took back home a female dwarf. As I understand she’s still pretty young. I thought she’ll be more active and communicating, but all she does is just sleep in her house. She comes out only to eat and runs back awayl. I know that they are nocturnal animals, but I wake up randomly in the middle of the night and she’s still sleeping in her house all the time. She also uses it as a toilet and I think as a “food hideout”. I’m sorry, but it is a week as I have her and I’m getting more annoyed than happy about her. I’m trying my best to get her used to me but how will she if she only sleeps at night and day....

Your hamster requires an adjustment period of several days to allow her to get used to the new environment. Moving to a new house would have been an extremely stressful event for her, and she needs the time to settle in and feel safe again. It is generally advised that you leave your hamster alone for the first week after you brought her home, other than providing food and changing water. If you haven't done so, I would suggest that you "start fresh" from today, and leave her be for a few days.

After your hamster feels more at home, she's more likely to start coming out more often, and establish a more regular routine which will give you an idea of her waking times. This is when you can begin the taming process - you should start by talking to her gently and getting her used to your presence, you could also put a bit of tissue in her cage to let her get used to your scent. After a few days of that, you can start trying to give her treats from your hand, which she will likely be hesitant about at first. Only after she feels comfortable enough with your hand, you can start trying to handle her.

Please be aware that taming a hamster is a slow process, which can take weeks, if not months. Some hamsters will have no interest in being tamed at all, and that is also completely fine - our main responsibility as pet owners is to provide them with the best environment to lead a healthy and happy life, everything else is secondary

Hoarding food and using their nest as a toilet is also a completely normal hamster behaviour
