afraid my hamster may have cage rage
i got my winter white hamster 2 weeks ago. she’s been settling in fine, no biting and loved to be handled. but just recently i have been woken up a few times to her running around the cage walls and trying to like “run up the walls.” she would do this for who knows how long, so i take her out a bit to have her run around and when i put her back in, it continues! she gets about 30 minutes each morning (2-3 am) so i put her back in the sleep. she’s in a 20 gallon right now but i am trying to upgrade by petcos next dollar per gallon and get a 40 gallon. will this get worse as time goes on? i really don’t want her to get stressed out and cause medical problems. would getting a 40 gallon resolve this or will it continue? my parents are a bit stubborn, telling me she’s fine in what she has right now. but i’m honestly so worried about my hamster. pls help

Re: afraid my hamster may have cage rage
That is typical behaviour of a bored and stressed hamster that needs more room or is in an inadequate setup. Do you have lots of shelter and a large hide for her to retreat to to feel safe? Unfortunately you are right that a 20gallon is too small, a 40 gallon would be about the very smallest you’d want to go. I would personally go for a 75 gallon. You cannot ever know if a hamster is going to be satisfied with any size cage but you can try and make it as enriching as possible, add a large enough wheel of at least 8 inches in diameter, add deep bedding for burrowing of at least 6-8 inches and generally speaking they do settle down. Some dwarfs seem to do OK in a 40 gallon, others have needed more room, which is why I would personally advise going larger. A detolf is a relatively cheap option but it does take up quite a lot of space. Letting them out for playtime can help but it is not a solution by any means.

Re: afraid my hamster may have cage rage
I do think it's the size of the cage. 20 gallon tank isn't that big. A 40 gallon breeder would be a good size for a dwarf hamster, but as M&M says it isn't just the space it's the enrichment - ie plenty of hidey places and overhead cover, and variety- different levels eg and a platform.

However, it could also be the heat. Does she have anywhere to cool off in the cage? Something ceramic like a mug on its side or a terracotta plant pot on its side. You may even need to have a fan on in the room. There is less ventilation in tanks than cages and the glass can get warm too.
