Unhappy Cage aggression?

Hi! So, I think my dwarf hamster might have cage aggression. When I put my hands in the cage (linnmon diy cage, 877sq") she runs towards me and bites my hand. It doesn't bleed, it just hurts a bit. If I pick something up, she tries to climb up whatever I'm holding and she tries to bite my hand again. If that sounds like cage aggression, can someone tell me more symptoms and if there is any way to stop or get around it?

Thanks.

Default Re: Cage aggression?

Sometimes aggression can be caused by not feeling safe in their havitat, adding more hides can help. Unfortunately though, actual cage aggression is very common in Russian Dwarfs and in my experience theres not much that can be done to stop it.

Cage aggressive hamsters are usually fine being handled outside of their homes (and some of them are more affectionate than my other hamsters!) so I use a mug to pick them up. I just let them climb into the mug and then lift it out the cage. If I have to clean their cages I’ll put them in a playpen or carrier. Avoiding full clean outs and rearranging the cage helps as well since cage aggressive hamsters can tend to be quite anxious about changes to their habitat.

She nips my hand even outside of her cage, whenever she is close to my hand. I have been rearranging her cage a lot though, and now that I know I'll stop it. I'll add more hides and leave her cage alone more. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks for the help.
