Question Scared little hamster

Hi everyone!

My little Syrian doesn't seem to be getting used to me! He is about a month and a half old and I've had him for about 2 weeks now. He does take treats (carrots, pumpkin seeds, etc) from me occasionally (I make sure to rub some of his bedding on my hand before going close to him), but if I place my palm flat in the cage, he gets terrified and starts climbing the bars and jumps from a height! I'm afraid he will get hurt that way! Is there anything I can do to make him feel at ease and get him used to me?

Do you gave a bath or big playpen/box that you can get in with your hamster, add a few treats and toys and see if that helps. Sometimes it can take a while. When transferring your hamster to either area you could put him in a big cup that she has voluntarily gone into from her cage, rather than your hands. Are you talking to him? let him get used to your voice, hold your hands up at the bars so he can smell you thru them and get used to that.

Since he's so scared of my palm, I wasn't sure if bathtub bonding would scare him even more, so I have not tried that. He does not like to move around or walk into a cup when he can smell me in his cage.

Don't give up on your little hammy! Sometimes different hamster's take longer to tame than others! I would keep doing what you are doing, putting your hand flat out and putting the treats in your palm. You could keep trying to keep give him treats until he is super comfortable with that before moving to the next step! The most important thing during the taming process is to have patience! After he finally can take the treat off of your hand without being scared you could try taking him to the bathtub, but only once he is comfortable, remember patience is key! You could also try to take some tissue/toilet paper and rub it against your hands to rub your scent onto them, then place the tissue/toilet paper into the cage. This is an automatic way for your hamster to get used to your scent because they will probably use it for their nest and sleep with your scent all day long ! Also, you can try talking to your hamster softly through the cage just so he can get used to your voice. Taming just takes time

Another way to greet your hamster too is to use the back of your hand and gently place it in front of their nose so they can smell your scent and become familiar with your hands.

Good luck!! I wish you the best

I'm working on taming my hamster, too. Basically what I do for her training is put her in her ball (she loves to be outside her cage), but before that I tell her she has to let me hold her. Then, I let her go in her ball. After she's done with the ball, I hold her again. I've been doing that for a while now. She's improved, but still doesn't like me holding her. I think she's a "look, don't touch" kind of hamster. I don't care; I'm still holding her, LOL.

Hope taming goes well for you!
