Default Hamster is itching himself?

So I got my hamster out of his cage for the first time tonight for a little taming session. I put him in a playpen which is actually a children's ball pit made of plastic. I noticed that he was itching himself a lot. Could this be a sign of stress?

I don't think it would be stress. They tend to do that in new environments to spead their scent around. They will scratch the scent glands to get scent on their feet then walk around and spread it.
