Its a good set up for the cage size! If he’s not showing signs of stress (bar chewing, pacing, etc) then I wouldnt worry about upgrading him for now). Although the cage is 10cm below the minimum, every hamster is different and some do prefer a smaller cage.

I’d keep on doing what you’re doing and following M&Ms advice. Both my male Syrians are tame but they prefer to be left alone most the time and freeze if you suddenly catch their attention, its just instincts really.

Oh good thank you. I haven’t seen or heard him chewing and he doesn’t pace but I think he is doing monkey bars. I know he did it in his old cage but I haven’t seen him do it in this one, there is evidence he might be though.

I don’t know why pet shops stock such small cages, it shouldn’t be allowed - this was the biggest they had and is twice as big as what he was in! I had a 1m x 50cm on order but it didn’t turn up when it was supposed to, so this was the interim cage. I’ve cancelled the bigger cage and I thought I might make him a new enclosure which this cage can fit into and then it’s up to him what he uses! However, I am going to let him settle in first.

Ok, will do - I feel a bit more relaxed about it now you’ve all helped me. Thank you all.

Hi, i just wanted to offer some reassurance: we adopted Alan last October at a year old and it took several months for him to warm to us. He would freeze every time we walked into the room then after ages would run back to his house. We didn't pick him up for about a month and even then it was softly softly and with a toilet roll tube!

He is just a shy fella and we got used to him as he did to us. We talked to him every night and only spot cleaned his cage once a week at first. He's quite tidy so it wasn't a problem. We started putting him in a pen for a few minutes every other day, then a few minutes more, then every day and started picking him up when he seemed less skittish. We always did every step with little treats like cucumber or dried sweetcorn. It was very gradual but now he's amazing! We play with him every night and he lets us pick him up no problem. He'll come to the side of the cage to get to us if he's particularly on form that day.

Keep being patient you're doing great!

Thanks Jaysephine! Sorry I've only just seen your reply - wish I'd seen it earlier but it's still reassuring to read!

I wanted to just let everyone that has responded, and those that may be having the same problem, that Oscar is indeed getting there and last night was the most active I have seen him! Moving fast, travelling all over the cage and playing in his sandbath. We even tried his playpen which he could access from the door of his cage and he decided when he'd had enough and went back home - it's so good to see.
