Default Is this stargazing?

My new baby is a dwarf Russian (probably mix). I got her last Wednesday and she’s so kind and curious she’ll climb in my hands treat free and be fine with petting, she’s active and walks all over me when handled. She loves to make tunnels and figured out her sand bath in the first try, as for the wheel she tries but it’s not great, she won’t run super fast without stopping like I’m used to see. Ever since she first got here she has this habit of standing in her back legs and falling on her back. It only happens when she’s in her cage, and not very frequent, she can enjoy her stuff without this happening. it kinda looks like she’s trying to sniff the air or climb the aquarium walls. She’s what I’d expect from a hamster but much more friendly I just found out stargazing is a thing so I’m a bit worried. At first she just seems a little clumsy, but aren’t all hamsters supposed to be?

I'm not an expert, but to me this doesn't sound like stargazing. Usually when a hamster "stargaze" they freeze up and won't move. One of my hams did this alot, and she wouldn't react even if i touched her. So if she's still very young she could just be a bit clumsy, but it's hard to say without seeing it. If you're very worried about it you could upload a video of it for us to see

Thank you! I’ll keep an eye on her and get it on video if I can. Honestly it doesn’t look nearly as alarming as some videos online

I guess some cases are worse than others. What cage is she in? There have been multiple cases where similar behaviour has started out of stress from being in a small cage with inadequate care, and stopped when the hamster has been housed better - not sure if that can apply here but worth mentioning. Some hams can be very clumsy yes but less common for it to reach the point they fall over backwards enough for you to notice! Still keeping an eye on her seems like a good plan.

When Stephano was a baby, he’d fall over backwards when he tried to meerkat. He outgrew it after a few months and became very talented at meekatting for treats lol. Some hamsters are clumsier than others, it sounds like shes just being a curious little hammie.

As M&M said, keep an eye on her just in case and look out for any signs of stress. Generally stargazing is very repetitive behaviour though

This is unlikely since she’s so young but do a full health check just in case. During my Mishka’s last few days she started stargazing and obsessively climbing the bars then throwing herself off. She was very sick though with end-stage diabetes.

She’s in a glass tank, a 75gal. She seems pretty happy with it, but I’m planing on buying her some more hides and toys, maybe a smaller wheel for while she’s a baby? She really sucks at running in hers (it’s 21cm, solid base, feels a bit heavy to spin compared to her weight but that’s just me guessing). I noticed she used to fall a lot more in the first couple of days, hopefully once she has been around for a while it’ll stop.

Yeah, I watched a couple of videos of hamsters stargazing and hers it’s not even close to that, I don’t get the same “compulsive” vibe from her and it’s usually once in a while instead of over and over, but a few times a day, I’ve noticed the frequency is decreasing so hopefully she’ll be fine

Okay so I’ll update this in case someone else experiences the same thing and comes across this. Poppy stopped falling over a few days after this, she’s fine now and loves her cage, her food and her humans. But most important of all she can meerkat successfully and it’s the cutest thing
