Post Bathtub Bonding

Hi,

I got my new hamster Sarlacc 7 weeks ago. I've been doing in cage training since week 2.

He takes treats out of my fingers and has started to sit on my hand with all 4 paws over the last 3 days. In fact he now approaches my hand from behind, sniffs my arm and climbs onto my hand to get the treats.

This has encouraged me to start out of cage training. Having had my last hamster escape a playpen and then shortly pass on, I've decided to try bathtub bonding. I've watched videos on YouTube and I'm a bit confused as to how to start.

Some videos show toys in the tub and some just let the hamster climb on them. So what should I do for the first session?

Would it be best to lie down in the bath and let him crawl on me and give him treats when he comes near my hands and arms?

Or have toys in there with us and give him treats when he comes near me?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

I notice that my hamster seems more nervous/scared if there is too much open space, so i suggest having some tubes and hidey spots in the tub. I usually also include a sand bath so he can pee in it if he wants, and water in case he gets thirst. Then i frequently offer treats when he gets near my hands. If he seems frantic (scratching to get out while looking at the exit) or scared (zombie hammmie mode, totally still and doesnt react to anything) I put him back in his cage. But usually he loves the tub

Thanks for the tip about putting toys and hides in the bath with us. I think it's helped him but he's only had 2 sessions and has been showing signs of stress during the sessions so I've kept bathtub taming short. It has helped though, he let me pick him up in my hands last night which is the first time ever.
