My hamster doesn't want to play outside the cage
Hi, I recently bought a 9 week old russian dwarf hamster for my daughter (5 weeks ago). We are beginners. We got him a great cage with lots of stuff and he seems content. We also bought a playpen and put lots of toys, wheel and a house in that. However, whenever we bring him out to play he runs about for a couple of minutes then just sits in his house eating, grooming and then looking as though he is going to sleep. We don't wake him to play but wait until he is up, which is usually fairly late, although it varies. We have got used to handling him a little and he has never shown any sign of aggression or fear - he has never bitten us (other than a gentle exploratory nibble). My 12 year old daughter, who loves Munchkins to bits, is getting a bit upset and thinks he doesn't like her. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: My hamster doesn't want to play outside the cage
Hi welcome & congrats on your new ham. Some hamsters (especially dwarfs I have found) just don't like coming out much and that's fine - might be that it's too overwhelming or he just prefers the comfort of his cage. With hamsters like that I do prefer to do most the taming inside the cage rather than get them out and do it in a playbox. Obviously that's personal choice but I've found it can lead to better results, when it's all done on their terms so is less stressful for them. They learn to associate hands etc with good things instead of just assuming they're going to be taken out. Kind of essential for there to be good top or front access though. With time as he gets older and more tame you may well find he starts enjoying time outside. Main thing is to not rush things, you do have to take your time and it isn't that the hamster doesn't like you it's more likely that he's nervous.
