Default Hamster suddenly moved sleeping location

Hey everyone,

New here and hoping for some advice.

I have a Syrian Hamster (Alfie) he is just over a year old.

Up to around last week he has always without fail slept in his house built into the top of his cage but since last week he has started sleeping inside his wheel which spins round the top of his cage.

I have tried cleaning it daily but he wont go back to his old sleeping place, the new place he is sleeping quite squashed and curved.

Anyone any ideas how to get him back to his old place?

Many thanks,
David

Hamsters normally like to change sleeping places from time to time but I think it stresses out a hamster if their cage is cleaned daily so I suggest cleaning only different parts of the cage if you want to clean it daily and leave a part of his cage the same.

I clean once a week and After I'm done cleaning cage for my Hammy Bear she usually changes sleeping location and moves her food stash and she'll stay there for a week til I clean her cage again.

Alfie might just need a bigger cage to have more sleeping areas too, like how big is his cage right now? Is there enough hideys for him to sleep in?

And welcome to HC! Hammy Bear & I wish All the best for you and Alfie!

Mine has just recently moved from his hut to a random nest he made in the corner of his cage, but I’ve put it down - after lots of research and watching him - to just weather change. If it’s warm in your room they tend to do this, or it could just be down to your hammie wanting to change up where it sleeps, which is normal.

To make sure he isn’t overheating you can put a mug in his cage that has been in the fridge for a couple hours to figure out if it is because of this, otherwise it’s probably just him changing things up. I wouldn’t be too worried.

My hamster has two nests, one in his house and one under a platform, both nests have a hoard. I cold be in either of them. I wouldn't worry. Thing with hamsters is that they do what they want to do not what we want them to do

It's perfectly normal for hamsters to move nesting areas. Sometimes they fancy a change or could be due to the temperature.

I would avoid cleaning daily as it can be stressful as it removes their scent. If the cage is big enough it should only need to be full cleaned once a month (or even longer), only removing 2/3 of the substrate and spot clean 2-3 times a week. Also it's good to clean the toys on a different day to changing the substrate so the cage always smells familiar
