New hamster sleeping outside hut?
I noticed today my hamster was kicking his bedding outside of the little plastic hut he sleeps in. I took him out later in the day for a run around the bathtub, he ate, and now I’ve noticed pretty much all the bedding is outside of the hut and he’s made a little nest next to it where he burrows and sleeps.
I’m a little worried if it’s because he’s too warm in the hut. My room is warmer but not too warm (the window and door is open with his cage in the shade and blind half down). I’ve got a mug in the fridge to see if he goes in there. Is this normal behaviour or is it a sign he is warm/something is up? I’ve had him over a week now and he’s confident in taking food out of my hand and crawling around/on me in the bathtub. Thank you

Re: New hamster sleeping outside hut?
My hamster has just done the same thing after a cage clean. He built a new nest under the platform and moved a food supply in. I expected him to tidy his old nest in his house but he's catching up on sleep under the platform now. I've never seen him that busy during daylight. Must be the warm weather. Maybe hamsters have a summer nest like we have summer duvets. I'm still fairly new to hamster living but I don't think there's anything amiss with our hamsters.

Exactly the same! My hamster was really active during the day too which was unusual. Hamsters are funny little things.

Re: New hamster sleeping outside hut?
It might well be the weather. But you are right it is very likely too hot and stuffy in there since it is small, plastic and has a base. This kind of house isn’t really suitable, plastic isn’t a breathable material so you’ll get condensation built up in there and it just creates a humid environment. It’s also small and the base means they can’t burrow down to sleep which is what they would naturally do.
What you can do for now is use a shoe box, cut the base out and fill with bedding. It’ll likely turn into a bit of a burrow which is better. If you want to buy a new one then guinea pig sized houses (wooden ones not plastic) are a better size, rodipet also do very nice houses that are worth looking at.

Re: New hamster sleeping outside hut?
our old hamster Daisy wouldn't use a house. she had a cage where you can have a deep layer of Fitch and she made impressive burrows into it. i think this is the nicest home for a ham, but then i'm not a hamster.
my 2 Syrian girls have large wooden houses, old Cotton always liked a plastic igloo, and Blossom has a china watering can from the cancer shop.

Re: New hamster sleeping outside hut?
My old Russian dwarf used to do this mainly because the temperature was too hot for her if your cage is big enough may I suggest placing some sort of safe tile, smooth rock surface for her to lay on and cool water. Does she lay super flat / is slightly wet on her tummy?
Regardless its worth to try giving her an alternative place which may resolve your issue, however, she could just be moving out her nest as, Keep us updated xx
