If you haven’t already, I recommend adding a good 15+cm of substrate so he can burrow, some dwarfs get stressed when they can’t burrow properly. Also a good size sandbath is important!

Terracota pots, safe natural wood chews (apple and willow are my hams favourites), whimzees, cork pieces, resin reptile hides, coconut hides, and pebbles are some of my favourite items to add to my hamsters’s cages. Giving them a good variety of textures and different sized toys to explore, chew, and climb/hide in is great for their enrichment. Adding hay and/or droed flower/herb mixes to areas of their cages adds new and interesting smells/textures too.
Scatterfeeding also keeps them busy and encourages foraging , as well as giving them nuts still in the shell (tho sometimes you have to make the first hole for them) and millet sprays.

Some hamsters will be completely happy in their cages and still run up to the cage edge and pat/scratch at it as a sign they want to come out and play as well, my mishka was like that! If he’s only doing it when he sees/hears you in the room and doesnt seem stressed then I souldnt worry too much.

He has 7 inches of substrate right now, but sadly the substrate can’t hold burrows at all. I don’t want to stress him out with frequent cleaning, so cleaning day is next week minimum. But he’ll have coconut bark, a big box thing with coconut fibre, snake aspen, wood pellets, a bunch of tunnel things and if I can find reasonably priced lollysticks I will build a platform for a rock (it’s too heavy to put directly on the substrate) he’ll have 10 inches of bedding. I think he’ll love that.

That sounds really good! I’m sure he’s gonna love exploring the different substrates and stuff adding layers of hay between the substrates helps to hold burrows too!

Lollysticks are pretty cheap in the kids section of craft stores and supermarkets!

What hay is good? Many hay bags here have herbs and things in them. I'm sure I'll find good lollysticks, but some of them are "craft sticks" and not food safe, which also isn't usable in a hamster cage I believe.

He might be trying to chew at the siicone holding the glass together. Its odd for a Russian to be unhappy in that tank size but every hamster is different and it looks like he needs an upgrade (something 120 x 60cm is a good size). Hopefully when you redo his setup it will be enough to distract him, sometimes that behaviour can become a habit and continue even after you’ve fixed the issue. Also check his wheel is spinning well and that its in a stable position

Most hay and herbs are fine for hamsters, i think most eople use timothy or meadow hay. Any lolly sticks should be okay, they dobt need to be food safe for humans

The theme is beautiful and everything seems perfect, so itís difficult to determine what it could be. He could indeed just be a hyperactive hammie. All I could think of would be to make sure he gets a good run around outside of his cage to get rid of excess energy, and just always be trying different boredom breakers/chew toys, something as simple as a walnut can keep a hamster busy for ages
