Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
It's partly why I kept getting bigger and bigger houses haha. So there was enough room for a potty, a big nest and a big hoard.

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
I'll get the rodipet S ceramic dwarf one because the M one takes up too much room. I may even get the rodipet two room house or saw the roof of the current one in two halves so he doesn't temporarily loose the roof over his head while i'm cleaning his toilet!

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
Hi Ria, I have the two room rodipet house. My Syrian has turned the outer room into his bathroom. Two sand baths in the cage make no difference to that. He does all his business in that outer room. So I take off the outer room roof to clean it out. Usually he is still in bed and puts his head out to see what is going on and I have nice treat to hand. Last night it was half a Walnut and he retreated to eat it! He usually comes out again to check me over and then will heave himself out over the edge of the house and go off elsewhere. I replace the substrate (fitch) and then top it up with fitch from elsewhere in the cage. That is so the top layer of fitch in the bathroom has his scent on it already. I put new fitch down to replace that in the cage and mix it.
Since he does nothing anywhere else in the cage, that is the only cleaning I have to do. He has become used to it and it does not seem to bother him.
Hope you have the same luck!

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
I have measured and now find that the rodipet house is a bit too wide for the current space used and I don't want to reposition the house because i'm unpopular enough with my hamster as it is. I'm thinking of getting my saw out and cut the roof of the feriplast house into two sections. He definitely pees in the same corner in the house because the cardboard tray was soaked. I've made a provisional corner litter tray out of a rubber icecube tray till i get a permanent one.

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
Had a saw out on houses before Only problem I found them is the roof can wobble a bit when walked on which our hamster didn’t like at all.

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
I have now bought an open plastic corner toilet and put the house and toilet on about an inch or two of substrate then put more in to cover the toilet and filled up around the house. I don't want to lift out the whole toilet but scoop out the pee'd on substrate (he won't pee in sand) every couple of days. The house door looks more like a cave entrance and both windows are covered now so it must be completely dark inside. My partner cut the roof into two sections so I can check the loo without disturbing the hamster in his nest. He absolutely hates losing the roof over his head even for a very short time. Also, lowering the house almost added another level. He just dragged his whimzee down with a lot of effort, lol.

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
I GIVE UP! The boys win. After all the carry on of installing a corner toilet into the house, Henry has now decided to pee in the clay plant pot outside again and to use the corner toilet as a foodstore. All stacked up with the whimzee along the wall it looks like a shop with the variety of food he's got in there. Henry can pee where he wants to because its his home. The end.

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
Ha ha. Newt did that too. He has 3 big rooms in his house. One end was his nest and adjacent to it the room with his potty. And that's how it was for a while until he decided he wanted to hoard outside his nest and in the potty. We had so much drama about me having to throw away pee'd on hoard, that I moved the potty to the third room - he now uses it there and continues to hoard in the middle room. It is so full of hoard and substrate he has difficulty getting out of his nest now lol! He tunnels through the hoard.
That happened because I put the house on the base of the cage and he couldn't hoard underneath his nest as far down as before.
Good that he is peeing outside the house anyway! Lol at the sweety shop!

Re: Hamster started to pee in his house!
If the hamster's house is too big they'll tend to go to the toilet in the corner of it instead of usually the corners of the actual cage.
The house I got for my hamster was a strawberry house from TinyHamsterPaws which fits my hamster perfect! (they're an American Brand so you have to pay shipping but there's a similar one in Pets At Home in pink).
