Default Help with unruly new Hamster

For context, I am a relatively new hamster owner. There where family hamsters in the house when I was a kid, but I wouldn't consider them mine as they weren't wholly my responsibility. Got my first hamster before Christmas after about 3-4 months of research. She unfortunately died to months later from health complications.

So I adopted a new hamster about two weeks ago. For the first few days she was absolutely fine. She was so relaxed in fact that the first day she was just walking around my room out of her ball. A few days ago her personality seems to have just flipped. She is almost constantly trying to climb out of her cage (I made a bin cage because I'd heard that most cages where too small).

From what I can tell she is exhibiting behaviour that her enclosure isn't big enough but everyone I've asked seem to think it's more then big enough (46x10.5x14 inches). She wont go in her ball anymore. I just got her an additional playpen and and she is still just biting the bars trying to climb out of it constantly. I've got a tone of toys for her to play with and swap then out routinely. I am planning to extend the cage to add an additional level, making it twice as big.

At this point I have no idea what to do. the only times she seem in any way calm or content now is when I'm holding her or she'e walking around my room. I obviously cant hold her all night and my room isn't anywhere near hamster proof.

Is there anything that you guys can think of that would help this situation? Because if I can't improve it soon I probably just going to have to take her back to the shop, as I don't like the idea of keeping around a pet that isn't happy.

Default Re: Help with unruly new Hamster

Is this for a Syrian? Don't know if it's is 10.5 or 14 inches high but regardless it isn't tall enough to build a second level. The dimensions don't really sound suitable for a cage to be honest, it's either very low or narrow both of which would be a problem. Do you have deep bedding in there? A dwarf you'll want at least 6 inches and a Syrian more like over 8 inches, so they can burrow. Which bin are you using or do you have a setup photo? Hamster balls aren't good for them it's better to use a playpen but they don't always work either. Make sure you aren't doing any big changes with the toys and enrichment - the odd change for an especially outgoing ham is fine but constant changes like that are stressful and may make her worse.
