Default New Hamster Acting Strange

I brought a Syrian home yesterday, he's a black (banded? I'm not quite sure) little baby and super cute. I brought him home in my carrier and put the carrier on its side in the cage, next to food and water so if the hammy is hungry/thirsty it can access those easily. However, as I was lowering the carrier into the cage he screamed and it gave me quite a shock. The only hamster I've had screamed at me in the past was one who had a lump on her leg and was in tremendous pain. I left the hamster alone and it wasn't coming out of the carrier like all my past (6) hamsters have done but I just regarded it as a different hamster with a different personality. I waited until night time to see if he would come out then and I saw him move about in his carrier but he never sets a foot out of it. It's now the next day and he still hasn't come out of his carrier. I'm unsure if he went to get food and or water so I put some near the carrier to lure him out but he ain't budging. I checked and he seems healthy and his back is moving up and down rapidly so I'm assuming he's very nervous. I wouldn't be asking this on the same day but its been a whole 24 hours and he's still in his carrier. I usually let my hamsters come out on their own but now I'm getting concerned. What should I do?

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much, let him do things at his own pace, all hammies are different, he does sound very nervy, we are on our third fluff and all have been totally different. Our current little chap is Ghost and he was so nervy/feisty when we brought him home, he would shy away all the time and hide , and chatter his teeth at me when I tried to handle him in quite an aggressive way.

Our last syrian only screamed once - when he was still a baby and in his pet carrier and I stupidly came with my hand from above. It's just fear. As Rads says he'll come out in his own time - I would just check the pet carrier can't fall over though and hurt him. I would probably suggest putting a tube with a treat in the end - one end next to the pet carrier on its side and the other end with the treat in leading into the cage - he should go into the tube - then you can remove the pet carrier. Does he have lots of dark places to go in the cage? A big house or a shelf? So he can set to and build a nest?

Once he's out of the carrier and in the tube and you've taken the carrier out you could put all the bedding from the carrier in the cage so it smells familiar.
