Squeaking/chirping when handling
I’ve had my female Syrian hamster for just over 4 months now and she has recently started to come around enough to be handled properly. I’m estimating that she’s about 6 months old. She’s tame enough and is perfectly happy to cone to my hands and let me pick her up and out of her cage, but after being out for about a minute she starts vocalising, the best way I can describe it is like little squeaky chirping sounds. I assume this means she’s getting annoyed or stressed so I place her back in her cage, but if I leave the front door open she’ll sniff around her cage for a bit and then voluntarily climb back into my hands and do the same again. Just trying to make sure I’m judging her behaviour correctly as I’ve never known a hamster to be vocal before so I’m at a bit of a loss as to what this means! She’s pretty calm when being handled but is pretty wiggly and doesn’t like to stay still. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Squeaking/chirping when handling
It doesn't sound like she's stressed tbh, they can be quite vocal & the sounds they make don't always mean the same in every situation, you need to take behaviour into account too, sometimes they make those same sounds when they're happy & enjoying something!

Re: Squeaking/chirping when handling
That’s good to know I’ve only ever heard hamsters sqeak when obviously stressed, and my Sprinkles can be a bit of a stress head so I was worried I was freaking her out haha! Thank you

Re: Squeaking/chirping when handling
All of my Syrians have peeped when they're happy. It's usually when they're getting their treats or going for a happy stroll when they first wake up. They make a chattering noise when they're irritated.
