Question odd noises and strange behavior

hello

hopefully this is just a simple thing and not something to be concern about.

Junhee is a male Chinese dwarf that lives in a 40 galloon tank born sometime in late Aug. Lately though he has been doing things that in the last 5 years of owning hamsters I've never seen one do.

This morning I heard him be very vocal squeaking noises slightly pitched and had dug himself to the bottom of the tank as far as he could go and continued to dig. I looked at the bottom of the tank where I could see all his tunnels and saw him and watched as he dug and made noises. I opened his tank located him and did a check on him to make sure he was ok. He seems healthy and is eating and drinking fine. I do hear him at night running in his wheel. But I've never seen nor heard a Chinese dwarf behave and make noises. I use Aspen bedding for him.

Just not sure if he was just annoyed by something or if this is normal for him. My room is usually around 70 to 74 sometimes lower like 65 as my house is old and I am in the northeast where we are struggling with outside temps being -10 at nights. I do use a space heater to keep the temps in my room around 70-74.

just hoping this isn't something to be concern about.

He could have been dreaming. Or something could have scared him. Or possibly got poked in the eye with a bit of the aspen wood? Has he done it since?

I had something like that once and a twiggy bit of wood had poked in his eye - it was supposed to be natural flower and leaf addition to the bedding- decided not to use it any more.

It does sound a bit like something may have scared him - no cats in the house are there? And yes it’s v cold right now - I also have a little heater on at night.

there is a cat in the house but no way to reach him at all. the tank is on a iron frame that comes up to my chest level (I am only 5'0 in. (152 cm)) and they bother have never met before. Junhee was just digging around and just seems to be annoyed. I haven't heard the noises since this morning.

I tried that fluffy bedding stuff that sometimes comes in very bright colors (not sure what's it called care fresh?) and it made him itchy so I switched him back to Aspen bedding but this was back in oct.

My Chinese hamsters squeak like that sometimes, apparently for no obvious reason, sometimes they do it frequently for a while & then don't do it again for ages so there's no real pattern but it hasn't been something to worry about.
If he was right at the bottom of the tank maybe he was just getting a bit frustrated that he couldn't dig any deeper!
You posted about him squeaking once before so maybe he's just one of those more vocal ones.

Carefresh substrate & fluffy bedding/nesting material are very different things, carefresh is safe if a bit dusty & some hams don't do well on it but fluffy bedding is dangerous.
If he's used to aspen I doubt it's anything to do with that.
