Default Sleep pattern

Hello everyone ! So happy to join the group. I got a winter white 5 days ago. He is amazingly adorable. He wakes up around 10pm every night and is back in his little hideout by 6am. Unfortunately, my kids rarely gets to play with him because they are in bed before 10. They only see him when he wakes at random times to eat , etc. I’s there any way to adjust his sleeping pattern so he is awake by, say, 7pm?

Welcome You can attempt to shift their sleep pattern if you can get into a routine where you feed him at a certain time every day. I wouldn't go in the nest or anything, best not to disturb that - just talking is enough. But if you feed the fresh food or some of his favourite treats at 7, they can learn when to come out for it.

5 days in is still very early and it's best to leave them to settle for at least the first week. His sleep pattern might change still. 7pm is quite early for lots of hamsters though, a lot of mine haven't really liked to come out until 10-12 but it does vary.

I would say leave the hamster for the time being and let them settle in and get into a routine.
When I got my winter white Pepper, she also only came out late at night and was gone early morning.
Now she's out and about at any time of the day if she hears/smells me in the house. And this became a routine for her without trying to force it into her. Just her own choice.

What mangoandmimi said! I would say do it gradually if you do try to wake him earlier than his normal time, begin just a little earlier then once he begins to associate your voice & the time with food then you can keep making it a little earlier until you get to a time that works for you.

Thank you all! I'll try that. BTW, not sure what you guys mean by "feed him". I always keep his food dish in his cage and he eats whenever he wants. That's the normal thing to do...no? I only "feed" him a spinach leaf or berry yogurt drop treat, if I see him out and about.

I assumed you fed him every day - doesn’t matter if you don’t though. If you scatter feed (sprinkle food over the bedding instead of using a bowl) then it’s probably easier as they can hear it. Even if you just rattle the food container it can work. Suppose it wouldn’t be as effective if your hamster isn’t currently storing food in a hoard, if he isn’t right now then he very likely will when he’s more settled. You’ll know when he starts when large amounts of food suddenly disappear! Then you’ll just have to feed a spoonful or so a day.

They do need to have food available at all times so you are doing that right, for trying to wake him earlier you could top up the bowl or scatter a little food each day you could also make it treat time & give him his veg at that time each evening (spinach is fine but it is good to slowly work up to daily veg but using a good variety so something different as many days as possible) you could also try giving something really smelly like a mealworm! That usually tempts them out.
I wouldn't give yogurt drops as they are just sugar & fat really, Russian hams are prone to diabetes so avoid sugars, honey or fruit as treats or in food.
