Question Newly bought hamster and public transport

Heyy

A year has passed after my first ham-ham died from old age, I got him when I was ~15 years old and I still had to get animals with my parent's permission.

I'm 18 now and I'm thinking about getting another hamster, but I still live with my parents and they don't fully support my "pet hoarding" (I have 3 cats, a darkling beetle colony and 4 Madagascan hissing roaches )

And here's the problem, I don't own a car nor can I drive, so I'm fully dependant on public transport which can take up to 1,5 hours. I'm worried that it might frighten a hamster and even make it untamable.

So... Opinions? I'm a little too anxious when it comes to animal feelings heh.

If you have a suitable carrier(something like this) with plenty of substrate in it to burrow down in most hams will travel quite well, you could also put a cardboard box with no base or a bendy bridge or something on top of the substrate as a cover for your ham, nothing too heavy though.
If you already have three cats do you have a room where you could keep your hamster where the cats can be kept out at all times? Cats or other predatory animals & hamsters (prey animals) don't mix & even the scent of a cat can be stressful for them along with the dangers of accidents & the cats getting to the hamster so do have a think about how you are going to keep them apart & your hamster safe & stress free before bringing one home.

Ah thank you for the info, I keep my cats away from my room because they make too much ruckus there.

As Cypher says - if you have a good pet carrier then a one off trip on public transport to collect them is fine, if it's planned to be as smooth as possible. Train is better than bus if possible as a smoother ride. Or even just get a taxi as a one off if it's not too far. I also take a fleece blanket and put that over the pet carrier so it's dark inside and they're not frightened by lights flashing and movement around about. In my case our baby hamster just burrowed down and went to sleep for the journey.

The point about cats is important though. Far too many nasty accidents with cats who will kill a hamster if they manage to get a cage open and can seriously scare a hamster and cause stress just by pestering at the cage or even the smell in the same room. Sounds like you have done it before though if you had a hamster previously so I'm sure you'll get that sorted. And make sure any cage is very secure so the hamster can't escape (some cage doors are more secure than others).

Do you have a cage? Views on good cages and requirements etc have changed over time.

My hamsters have travelled a fair few times by public transport and they’ve always coped with it pretty well. If they’re not travelling in their show pens then I’ll pop them in a carrier with plenty of bedding that they can make themselves comfortable in, a source of moisture such as a chunk of cucumber and a bit of food and they usually go to sleep. To reduce the risk of them being disturbed by onlookers you can then pop their carrier in a fabric bag for life.

Where are you getting your hamster from? I’ve found that most of my hamsters from club/show breeders cope very well with the journey to their new homes and their taming has not really been an issue but a pet shop hamster that has not had a head start with taming before they come to live with you might need a little bit longer to settle after a long journey before you can start the taming process.

I brought my hamster home on the bus. I used a big sistema tupperware box with holes drilled in the sides and lots of fitch bedding and torn tissues from up my sleeve and a toilet roll tube cut lengthways to make a hide and I got them to put some of her old bedding in for the way home and settling in. She was totally cool with that!

It was only a 35 minute bus trip but we ended up waiting out at the stop for 10 minutes and had to walk about 5 back from the other end to my house after too. I left her to settle for 3 days after and she was fine!
