Default Odd Water bottle behavior

I have had my Long Haired Syrian (Louie) for almost two years now and up until recently I have had no issues with his behavior. He has been aggressively fixated on his water bottle and I am a bit concerned. It started when he chewed through the Velcro that attached the bottle to the side of his tank about a week ago. Since then I have been standing his water in a cardboard tube. I didn’t think much of it until I caught him trying to pouch the entire end of the bottle. (When I say this I mean he was grabbing it with both of his little paws and was trying to repeatedly shove the whole large glass bottle in his pouch starting at the tip over and over again; It was honestly almost disturbing to watch ) since then I have seen him do this a couple of times and I often come home to his water bottle being ripped out of the holder and spilled all over his bedding. Not really sure what to do and it’s kind of freaking me out. Any thoughts/ advice?

Sometimes they do end up doing these with bottles, even if it's working properly and everything. I suspect there's a range of reasons why they do it, I'd guess frustration that only a bit of water is being let out at a time is one of them. I also noticed one of my hamsters do that before realising the bottle being used sometimes didn't work properly. Other hamsters start doing it seemingly out of boredom. So it might be worth switching to a bowl if it continues, just a small ceramic bowl under 8cm in diameter. If it's on a shelf there shouldn't be any issues with tipping it over/things ending up in the water etc.

Once they start doing things like this, for whatever reason, it can become a bit of a habit that's hard to break & if the water bottle tips over he won't be able to use it plus you'll probably be getting wet substrate patches so I would just change to a bowl, it's very unusual for hams not to take to a bowl & most actually prefer it.
