Default Toileting Issues!

Hi all, I have recently adopted a gorgeous Syrian hamster from Pets at Home. She is a great character and settling well. However, she is not like my previous hamsters as she wees in the opposite corner to the sand box instead of in it! And her urine is incredibly smelly! How can I encourage her to use the sand box please??? Many thanks!

Have you tried moving the sand to her pee corner? It's best to let them choose where they want to pee rather than try to persuade them to go somewhere else.

My robo is now a year old and still wees all over the place. Some hamsters just do their own thing tbh

Ah yes - the hamster dictates the toilet area! They will only use a litter tray if you put it in the place they have chosen Interestingly I found if you give them a large house, they move their toilet corner inside the house - as such I always have a large house now with a corner litter tray inside it If the house has a lift-off roof you just take the roof off and empty the potty every five days or so and the rest of the cage stays clean and dry - apart from the odd wee in the wheel of course.

Anyway giving them a large house isn't compulsory. If the sand box is too big to move to her chosen corner then maybe add a corner litter tray as well in that corner.

I've found these good - not too big or too small. They tend to pee in the back corner and sit in the front for a wash

Ghost is clearly the awkward variety of Hammy as he pees in his house and in his sand box...

My Syrian is the same!

Jackie, as others have said, try moving the sand to her pee corner. You can also put a little bit of her peed on substrate in the sand to encourage her to continue toileting there.
