New hamster is hiding
Hi,
I got a new Syrian hamster two days ago and as I'd had one before (though it was a long time ago) I thought I knew what to do but my hamster (Henry) spends most of his time hiding and only comes out when he thinks I'm not there. I know it's early days but I'm a bit worried about how I'm going to tame him and get him used to handling if I can't even get him to come out. Any advice? Is this normal??

Re: New hamster is hiding
Congratulations on Henry
Yes his behaviour is very normal, you've only had him 2 days. Best leave him & the cage alone for 1-2 weeks now. That includes no cleaning anything just so he can settle in nicely. He'll be quite stressed now so it's no wonder he's hiding a lot. Don't worry about taming just yet, there's no rush and you can start that in a week or two depending on how quickly he settles.

Sounds normal to me! He just needs a little time to adjust to his new surroundings.

Re: New hamster is hiding
I agree with the others. Every hamster is different when it comes to adapting. Be sure to talk to him in a quiet voice even if you can't see him. It gets him use to the sound of your voice. Also, when he does appear, be sure to praise him, this will help with his confidence. You could try the tissue trick, get some unscented toilet paper and put it up the sleeves of your arms and leave for a few hours, then place in his cage, curiosity will have him sniffing it, this gets him use to your smell. Do this for a week, add a bit more each day, most hams will end up using it as extra bedding.

Re: New hamster is hiding
My Syrian is a very shy boy, it took me a long time to get him used to me. I've not tamed him, yet, but I've gotten to the stage where he will accept food from me. As long as there's no sudden movements he will come sit beside me when I'm near the cage. I reccomend using treats to get Henry to come out, try opening the cage door and holding a treat just in the entrance, (Don't go poking him, I can't imagine that will end well) for Peewee this worked, and yes, it may take a while. But hey, he holds onto my finger with his tiny little paws.

Re: New hamster is hiding
Hi,
My first rescue hamster from Pets at Home was very scared and screeched at me whenever I approached her cage. I left her in peace in the spare room for about a week before I started getting her out (I used a box to get her out and put her in the bath and gradually went in with her) She turned out to be the tamest and most chilled hamster ever! Good luck!

Ditto on what everyone else has said. I just takes time for them to settle into a new environment. He is still getting used to all the new noises, smells, and environment. He will hopefully come around soon enough!
