Default Squawking Hamster

Morning.

I am after some advice please.

My son has a Syrian hamster, he is 5 months old. Ever since we have got him he doesn't 'chatter' he squawks, almost like he's in a temper!

Has anyone else has a hamster who does this? Is it normal? I am beginning to think he was separated from his mum too early but I just don't know.

Mine did it too! How's the taming process going? My Belinda was super jumpy, but we found some snacks she adores (porridge oats & a tiny slice of potato) and now she's getting a bit more okay with us (still early days) - it's just about being patient and giving them space! I find that for taming (if possible) doing it in a neutral environment is best (like a bathtub!), it keeps their territory as theirs & doesn't make you seem like an intruder whilst they're getting used to your scent, also rubbing your hands through their bedding & food is good so that they know your smell

In short, patience + tasty treats is the way to a hamsters heart

It is quite normal for a young nervous ham to screech or make similar noises.
What taming steps have you taken?
If they feel insecure in the cage, usually from too much open empty space or if the cage is too small they can get nervous or territorial so it may be you need to think about his cage & how it's set up to make him feel happier.

Our current Syrian hamster made loud squealing noises on a couple of occasions in the first week after we had adopted her. We put it down to being very nervous of us at first. I agree with Snowbuckets love patience and food helps it takes time to gain a hamsters trust.
