Default Splish splash having a bath??

Does anyone else have a hammie that sits in the water bowl sometimes? Surely doesn’t look pleasant but he does it on his own accord!

Is this fine?

I can't say for sure if this is safe, but they do have protective coatings on their body that can be washed away because of the water- also your ham's germs and such going into the water, which the ham drinks afterwards- I don't think it'd be a pleasant taste.

As long as your water bowl isn't deep enough for your ham to drown in, I'd say it's okay for a short period of time. Perhaps try to break this ham's habit if you're worried about it, or try to switch to a water bowl- if you have a bin cage or a aquarium/tank, you can use things like Velcro to attach the water bottle to the tank. I have a bin cage and I poke holes through the walls of the cage, attach a chain through the holes on the outside of the cage, slip in the water bottle with another hole that lets the spout droop down, and my hamster doesn't chew on the holes! (She did once, but I scolded her as I caught her in the act, and she hasn't done it since!)

I'd suggest having others reply to this, though. I'm not 100% sure if my argument is even valid, aha.

How deep is your water dish? Maybe try a shallow dish.
I was thinking him sitting in his dish may be him trying to cool down what with this crazy hot weather we've had and still getting. When did he start doing it?

It’s very shallow just a couple cm deep and I replace it every night.

Thumbs up Re: Splish splash having a bath??

If you are worried about this, you can switch to a water dispenser.

hamsters aren't meant to sit in water, and they can get a cold. even if your hamster seems to be fine with it, i'd suggest switching to a water bottle.

alternately, it could be because they're too warm! it's summer, after all. you can try putting a cold ceramic plate or cup in there and see if that solves it.
