Default Questions

So my roommate got a hamster. Shes definatly different personality wise than my Kiku which is why i have some questions. First all she does is chews on her bars. She has a Wheel, No less than 6 toys in her cage at a time of verying types. If we put a toy that you tie to the side of cage shell chew at till she gets it off and then goes back to chewing on the bars. We have been thinking about using an aquarium tank but we wont be able to afford one untill are next payday in 2 weeks so questions.
1. What are some things that can help her bar chewing out side of her toys?
2. Would an aquarium tank be best? (im mostly worried about the poor ventalation)

Also at what age do hamsters slow down? Shes alot more crazy and active than Kiku was and it kinda threw me off guard. Hence why she got the name Yuno
Thanks Have a great Day!!

Default Re: Questions

All hams are different & enjoy different things so it can be a bit of trial & error getting things right.
Which cage is she in? Sometimes it just a case of boredom, if the cage isn't big enough or the set up isn't right with lots of enrichment,.
Simple things like scatter feeding or hiding food & or treats around the cage can help, making things like toilet roll treat toys so they have to work for food can keep them busy for quite a while & distract them from bar chewing.
Whimzee/antos dog chews are about the best thing for them to chew on, most hams really enjoy those rather than chew toys sold for hams.
Bar chewing can also be attention seeking, it's always best not to "reward" it by paying attention when they're actually doing it & only go over to the cage when it stops.
It can become a habit which is hard to break in which case a tank style cage maybe the only answer but you can try other things first.
There's a thread here that might help.
