Post How to handle a biting hamster?

Hello, sorry, I'm back again!
I have been taming my Syrian hamster Pip (I have had him for three weeks) slowly. First I gave him treats through the bars of his cage, then inside the cage, then I started stroking him while he was in his cardboard box 'playpen.' He loves being in his ball and while he enjoys a peanut he lets me stroke him lots. So I am now trying to handle him but it is proving difficult!
Every time I try to pick him up he wriggles away so I can't lift him. Since he has bitten twice, I am using gloves.
How can I handle him if he doesn't like being picked up?
Thank you so much for all the advice 😊

Don't try lifting him up too soon, let him get used to running over your hands to begin with, then you can try letting him run from one hand to the other, he may then sit still on your hand to eat a treat if you put it on your palm, you could try cupping one hand over him to hold him, then move on to lifting very very slightly just for a second or two then gradually increase the time you hold him & how high you lift him.
It's a very gradual process with some hams so small steps & don't move on too quickly. Young hams are very active too & not keen on sitting still or being held for long so don't expect too much too soon.

I agree with Cypher's advice, I had a difficult ham called 'Twinkle The Diva' a few years ago and I was at my wits end, really thought she hated me but, I went back to the basics and yes it took time but well worth it and so rewarding. Remember to praise your hammy and reward him, also talk to him as much as you can in a soft quiet voice even if he's not in view.
