Sudden Excessive Digging
Hi! My hamster is suddenly digging a lot, in her cage and when I bring her out to play on my desk. She usually does not dig this much. She's digging around her cage, running under all the bedding. And when I bring her out to play on my desk, she's scratching at things. I've had her for a year now, she's never done this. Does anyone have any idea why the sudden change?
Thanks~

Re: Sudden Excessive Digging
I am guessing this is instinctive behaviour. In the wild hamsters would live in warm desert climates, but because they're crepuscular they come out at dawn and dusk (the cooler times). This is why they live in burrows in the wild, underground is much cooler than it is above ground during the day. With the heat wave at the moment, I believe your hamster is trying to dig underground to get cooler. Have you offered anything cool for her in her cage? a mug that has been in the freezer for a couple of hours would help, as well as a ceramic tile that has been in the fridge for a couple hours. They will lay on top or inside the mug to cool off.
Also, hamsters just love to dig. She may have just found her new found love of things to do, I wouldn't worry too much xx

Re: Sudden Excessive Digging
My ham has been digging more in his cage during the past few weeks due to it being very hot. He dug out all the carefresh from one corner and would use that corner to lie in when he felt too hot, he also used his ceramic flowerpot a lot too. He also has a couple of fans to keep him cool.

Re: Sudden Excessive Digging
My hammie was like this when I got her! She still does it... especially in her new sand bath I got her! Which i place in a deep ceramic bowl and she loveloveloves digging deep into! I'm sure its normal! I always joke around saying I have a dog xD.
Maybe you should get your hammie a dugout tower! Not many hamster owners get it.. but I DIY'ed my own just cause my hammie loves digging and I see her go in it every hour lol..
the best part, shes being cleaned while having fun!

Re: Sudden Excessive Digging
If her behaviour has changed - has anything else changed recently? They do love to dig and mess about with substrate but if it's a bit frantic then she is maybe trying to dig her way out because something has stressed her? Our hamster digs at things out of the cage when hes pouched something (like he's looking for a place to bury it).
They can get a bit stressed after a clean out and it's best not to remove their hoards completely. I leave it unless it's pee'd on and then if I have to remove some it's best to put new food back to replace it in exactly the same place. Also they freak out if their nest has been removed. Sorryif you know all that already.
If he's not stressed it sounds like he's having fun.
